Title: Chassis lube points
Post by: Dean & Dee on August 05, 2013, 01:35:26 pm
I have an appt. next week with a local shop for an inspection sticker and oil change/lube. I know to tell them to not lube the Meritor's, but is there a chart anywhere that gives all the zerk locations on the FT chassis?

Yes.  There is a page in your manual.  I made a copy for them whenever I have mine done by others.  It shows the points (including the brakes).

On my 95 U280 there is one zerk located up high on the steering shaft right at the floor that is a b.... to get at.  I have to coach the tech every time to find it and lube it.

I found my file...but it is for a 2002.  Likely the same as far as lube points.

Dean, I would urge you to really emphasize the Meritor instruction. I have had two shops grease them in spite of specific instructions to ignore them. Last time I brought some clay based grease and a grease gun for them to use on the brakes and gave them the instructions in writing.

Barry & Cindy had a great idea to put tie wraps around the zerk fittings you don't want lubed. I have done that to mine as a reminder to myself.

Barry,
Good info EXCEPT for the caliper slide pin lubing, As I understand the paper, the #2 location "Caliper slide pins, lube with the same grease as the other Zerk fittings, Hope I miss understand that info.  Using the heavy grease sure would attract dirt, grime soon binding up the slide pins.  So I only clean the slide pins and spray dry silicone on the pins, reassemble.
Not being a paper pusher mechanic, it just caught my attention.
Where have I missed the point ?

This is Foretravels information from their manual.

Like my favorite saying, Do what makes you happy, howsomever Foretravel is wrong on this tid bit. See a need to corner Mark Harvey, he knows I ask specific questions requiring specific answers as in not dodging it.
Cheers

I believe the Meritor book sez not to lube the pins.

Thanks guys. I had looked in my manuals but had not found anything. May have been removed for a previous chassis lube.
As far as the Meritor grease issue the guys at my local shop specialize in Fire truck maintenance and repair. Fire trucks often have Meritor brakes but I will emphasize it to them anyway. They usually let me hang in the shop while they do their thing.

They seem to be quite impressed with the Foretravel design and construction.

I like the idea of putting zip ties on the brake zerks, may just do that.

Thanks again, you guys are great,

Just had a good talk woth Mark Harvey, he is in agreement with either a dry silicone or just dry slide/guide pins, is unsure of the listing that indicates the use of the grease, must have gotten past the proof writers.

Something so wrong I feel needs called out.  No one wants gummed up / dragging caliper slides.

Glad this thread showed up and Barry posted that link (reminded me to check). I'm due to lube the rig so it was timely. Thanks!!!

Good Catch Dave. Goes to show even the factory manual can be incorrect. And if you don't know well you don't know.
I think it is this way in all there manuals. So they missed it a long time. :o
