Title: Roof spotlight
Post by: Caflashbob on August 16, 2013, 08:40:20 pm
I miss my old Foretravel roof remote light.  Used to point it on the right shoulder a couple hundred yards ahead of us at night and it stopped people from turning out in front of me and slowly accelerate.  And of course to see things.

My tech buddy says they come in remote control also now.

Anyone old tech like me?  Every old Foretravel had a roof spotlight.  How can you live without one?

Had two Foretravels with that and sure was glad to have it a few times. Ah...I guess it's like automatic dimmers.  A thing of the past.

I have the roof spotlight on my U300 but it doesn't move vertically anymore. Sometimes it doesn't want to move horizontally either. I wonder if there's a motor repair kit for it? The bulb still works so I just leave it pointed way down the road and use it sometimes in rural areas to see deer before I get close enough for them to jump in front of me... You're right though, not a lot of newer coaches have a roof spotlight anymore, among other things that have been dropped from the newer coaches.

Probably a combination of cost cutting and sleeker design eliminated the spotlight but I find mine very useful.  I remember someone posted a simple overhaul procedure for the mechanism a few years ago on the forum, unfortunately I did not bookmark it.

It's in an awkward spot to get to for repairs. I really can't reach it safely from the roof or from a ladder due to the angle.

My thoughts exactly when I think about getting my searchlight working. I could have done it when I was 30 without a second thought but at my age that is a spot (at least on a GV) that is really hard to get to safely. Maybe if I get the DW to belay me up on the roof I could slither down to it. I think the lamp has to be replaced in mine as it rotates and moves nicely but no light.

Scott,

In addition to Barry's post on changing the bulb, there is no motor repair kit that I know of,  but Merle Hench and Dave Head also have  great posts with pics on how to repair the gears, motor, etc.

Is your old Rayline spotlight not rotating anymore? Fix it for $1.25 (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=13743.0)

Now to figure out a reasonably safe way to get to the spotlight to work on it... maybe if I drive up to a tree, climb the tree and hang down from a tree limb over the windshield like a spider... ;D
