Title: 2000 U295 safe
Post by: pedalman on August 23, 2013, 04:27:03 pm
Does anyone know if the safe in a 2000 U295 is fire proof? If not, has anyone found a product that is fireproof that fits in the safe for important documents?    Thanks, Josh

I don't think there is such a thing as a fire proof safe.  They will all allow their contents to be incinerated if the fire lasts long enough.

I believe that whether a safe is fireproof it only keeps the important ashes in one place if the fire is hot enough and lasts for more than a few minutes. It's just like your home oven, the food cooks and can burn while the oven doesn't but at least you know where the charred remains of the food are.

I'm not sure where your safe is located but on the Grand Villas it is beneath the floor and in the front of the coach therefore it would be an unusual fire that could get hot enough for long enough to incinerate the contents. I think I recall that the safe on the Unicoach is in the rear and above floor level. If so, I trust Foretravel would have used a safe with additional heat resistance.

If a safe has any fireproof capabilities it should have a UL label on stating the fire  rating.  For example if label says UL 1 1/2 hour rated that would indicate that a fire would take that long to burn up the contents. In addition the fire and burglar ratings can get complicated.
Don't think I would like to test the fire rating.
I will have to look at ours to see if it is fire rated.
Here is some info:

Hey, Safe  fire resistance is no problem, after buying a FT and a few fuel stops and a stop at NAC for renovations you won't have any cash anyway. :)

I put a small box in my safe, wrote "Surprise, try again" on it. Love driving folks nuts. ;D
