Title: Starter
Post by: bbeane on November 22, 2013, 09:32:00 pm
Has anyone changed out their direct drive starter to a reduction type starter on an ISC?

We changed our starter ourselves earlier this year.

My coach has never been a good starter in cool /cold weather. Have done all the system checks ,cables for high resistance/voltage under a load, rebuilt starter due to its age about 4 years ago, engine grid heaters in good working order. So the next thing is a Delco Remy reduction drive starter, just wondering if anyone had done this yet. I think the correct starter is an MT39 part #8200433 8/10 pitch CW rotation, 12 tooth drive SAE #3 mount. That should be less draw on the batteries and more cranking power (7.3KW).

Our story is similar to Bruce & Linda in that we always wonder when turning the key if we would have a hesitation start or a good start. We changed a lot of a year, including all relays, local rebuilder to put new parts in our starter, extra #4 ground cable, added 3rd red-top, cleaned a cable ends, etc etc.

We next decided to find a BRAND NEW, not factory rebuilt Delco brand starter, which we finally located. We swapped out our rebuilt starter with the same model new starter. And since the change, we always start like new, with less than one crank of engine. New starter ended up doing it for us. But I do think that a Delco factory rebuilt could also have done the job, but we decided to go all the way, to eliminate the starter as the source of the problem. We are now very happy campers.

Barry,
You hit on my opinion, I trust very very few rebuilders for anything.

Hey Bill,
Hope when you get home, all is what you expect hahaha.  As for tell em, yes, sometimes I offer my experiences on some things, but am learning to limit info. :)
Cheers

Welllll rebuilt is what it is some better than others buttt it is not new. That's why if I'm going to spring for a new starter I'm going with a reduction drive unit
