Are dual wheels usually required on tag axles for proper coach loading and stability? I have seen passenger and tour coaches with single wheels on the tags. Maybe they are designed to be operated that way. How about FTs?
Tags on FTs have single wheels. The drive axles are duals. Tags are on 42' coaches and also generally when there's a BR slide on a 38' and longer and are there for CCC (weight capacity).
The tag axle is there to add additional weight-carrying capacity. A single tire on each side is sufficient to add the needed capacity. Therefore, dual tires are not required.
Didn't the old Bluebird Wanderlodges have a dually tag?
We considered a 'Bird, and looked at a couple of PTs. None of them had a dually tag. I'll ask Randy, though, just to make sure.
Some of the barth motorhomes had dually tag axles as they were very heavy and were running 16 inch tires
Just heard back, and there might have been a very customized one made with a dually tag, but the "standard" 'Birds with tags are single wheels.
We have a tag on our 43. Some coaches had steerable tags. Some have liftable, which I have.
This steerable tag axle is in big usage on heavy dump trucks . This has been on going and in use in trucks for many years . Not something new .The first time I noticed them was in 1971 on a truck hauling gravel to my farm . I thought that was a pretty neat thing . Newell is the first coach maker to use them that I am aware of . They are a lot more expensive and weigh a bunch more . I will take my lifting tag over a steerable tag any day of the week .I can see a city bus using them as they make right angle turns all day long . Brad Metzger
