Title: Speedo / cruise problem help please
Post by: danieljeff545 on January 31, 2014, 08:11:01 pm
After our tire blow out on the last trip our speedo and cruise stopped working. I researched the topic here and found out that the cable comes out from the side I had damage to and goes to the tranny from there. I just heard back from my repair shop and they did to find any damage to that area and all the connections are intact. Unfortunately, I had assumed (we know what that means) that it had been damaged from the blow out but it wasn't.  I had hoped for an easy fix.

I get the coach back on Monday and was hoping that maybe you all might have some suggestions. Fuses were all good but other than that I did not investigate any further yet. I found many previous posts involving the electronic speedo but mine is a '89 and isn't.

Thanks ahead of time
Jeff

When you get your coach back check on the passenger side of the transmission, there should be 2 senders that are attatched to a t assembly and each sender has 2 wires coming from it. The longer one is for the speedometer. You can remove it and us a drill to turn it and with the key on, engine does not have to running, have someone check if the speedo is working. You can also check the cruise sender with a drill to turn it and see if it is putting out an ac voltage.

I have the Allison MTB 648 and periodically the speedometer jumps and reads erratically. I'm wondering if a new sender might solve the problem. Has anyone done this?

Thanks for the input from all of you.  The Cummins dealer has not had any luck fixing it as of this morning.  I will attempt the cleaning and greasing but it wont be until after our next trip to Florida. Thanks again

When you get to Florida if you would like some help with this contact me as we live near Tampa and we are home now after our test of how the coach will keep us warm in - 10 degree weather. The coach passed in flying colors, but I failed to see any sense of living there so back home in Florida

Thank you very much for the offer Red...I'll see if the DW will give me some "work time" on this trip lol...I understand your thinking. Once we can retire from our current jobs we will not be living in sub 32 degree weather any longer! Too many places to visit with our FT!

Grease it and tighten up the connecter first.  That cured mine.

Pat C, regarding the 2 senders I looked on mine and did not see them on Pass side. I had a tach /odometer problem coming home as it only recorded 200 miles for a 3000 trip?? The tach seemed to work ok but not odo'.
One thing I have to say is having the PIT has been a godsend to me and has made working on it easy. I must have saved enough labour costs to build 2 of them at least. I even have the floor carpeted now for comfort.

Can't be long before there's a small refrigerator, surround sound and a feed for sat TV.  Hey, we don't do this stuff to suffer, why not be comfortable?

You mean Red Tractor.

But my mind has so much stuff in it that I can't remember any more.  Isn't there a cable that screws into the tranny?  I thought there was.  But then you have a different tranny.  I only have the 4 speed.  Some grease where the cable screwed in helped.

I wish I had a pit too, with a big garage over it!

I picked up the coach today but with single digit temps and -20 wind chill I did not get under her to grease that fitting. It should warm up (20's...brrr) on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll get to check I then before we leave. This spring I guess we will have to upgrade to the King Cruise... Sure wish I had a PIT!!!

Yes it sure beats lying on your back. Well worth the time and money putting it in. It must be nice to have one like Peirce has as he can go from one end of coach to other. I have to turn our coaches around, but it is not hard to do that is it?

Well that would work ok as if you pass on you can be in 1 pit and the coach in another ^.^d ^.^d

Well without a pit I was unable to get under the coach to grease the fitting. I can see the whole assembly but since I'm 6'5" and 270 there is no fitting my body under there to do any work. It doesn't help with 10 degree weather...Florida bound tomorrow!!!!

Jeff,

Where are you headed-- several of us already in FL.

We are in Melbourne-- leave the 24th (our month here will be up), then need to find a place between Melbourne and Brunswick GA. for a couple of days.

So, would appreciate a PM with suggestions in the north FL area.

We have to be in Brunswick 2/28 for a board meeting of the Diesel RV Club prior to the three Maintenance Presentations I do for them at their Rally: Diesel RV Club - Georgia on My Mind Rally (http://www.dieselrvclub.org/planned?eventId=702603&EventViewMode=EventDetails).

Red, Brett,

Thank you for the help...we made it down here to sunny Fort Myers with no problems. I got a better look at the sending unit today but could not see a zerk fitting. I still couldn't get under it to take anything apart unless I raise all the wheels off the ground and if I do that I sure as hell am not getting under it! I'm a little closterphobic to begin with lol. I will just update to a King Control this spring. Thanks again for everyone's input!

I will tell you what happened to me although I did not have the tire challenge you experienced. My speedometer would be going along just fine and then at times I would look down and find that is was on zero and I hadn't known how long. When we'd stop I'd look and look and look some more but could never figure it out. A note here.....the tach would also stop, so when I was at idle I could tell if it would work or not. Well, one day while I was doing something under the dash and behind the gauges while the unit was running and somewhere on the back of "one" of those gauges there was a couple wires "grounded" on the mounting threads of the gauge. When I bumped it the tack started to flutter. OMGosh!! I was shocked because I really didn't know what I was going to do but was working on something completely different. This was pretty exciting to me. I gently took my fingers and touched the brushed against all the wires back there slowly until I seen it jump again and when I found it I tightened it and have not had a problem since. Just sayin.....
Maybe your issue is nothing like mine but we have very similar coaches...I think
Good luck

Carl we had your problem and it required new wiring from computer to transmission.  This fixed the speedometer  it now we have the tachometer going haywire.  We will need to try your solution.

I hope it may help either of you. It was no more than a simple and slightly loose ground on a gauge....who'd-a-thunk-it?

And yes Jeff....I DO know the drive from Michigan to Ft. Myers Florida...very well. Enjoy :)
