Title: windshield gasket- wish me luck
Post by: twobus on April 04, 2014, 04:28:07 pm
When we bought Moby, we knew it had an issue at the top right corner of the passenger side windshield. Lots of extra silicon goop had been applied there sometime past. Last drive, it started raining some from that corner, and looking from the outside, you could see the gasket has rather come apart, with the centrer locking strip having pulled out away from the rest of the gasket for around a foot or so. Assuming the worst, I'm getting ready to order up a gasket, and then take the thing to a glass shop and hope they don't bust the glass. but before we do that, the shop is gonna try a urethane fix and see if that'll keep the water out.  I'd really rather do that, and avoid the glass-R&R nightmare. I'm scheduled to take it back to the glass shop in a couple weeks and we'll see how it goes...

Will you post where you got the gasket and how many (inches) you ordered Jay?

I have a 1987 GV so I would think they would be the same.

Mine is shrinking at the joints and the one where the two windshields meet really leaked big time on the dash before it became mine. I had to fix lots of wood rot under the vinyl.

I have patch the gaps with black goop that's used to seal electrical boxes. Looks OK, but I want to replace the gasket.

Tyler said he'd have to call me back about the gasket. When he does I'll ask about a short section. I don't think however that a piece of gasket can be replaced without pulling the glass all the way out...

Thanks Jay for the information, but I need the whole gasket. Reading the other post, Gary said it's around $150, but that was some time ago. May be double that now.

Our '89 windshield shrunk with age, enough that there was a 3/4" gap about 4" from the inside edge of the passenger windshield. I had tried some windshield black sealer. It failed. When we put the outside windshield cover on it trapped water between it and the glass, then the water ran inside. A friend across from us had some Geocel ProflexRV crystal clear brushable layflat sealant. I masked the glass within an 1/8" of the rubber gasket, brushed on the sealant and have had no leaks since. I also did around the skylight in the bathroom---no leaks either now.
The sealer is available in quarts for RV catalog price of $28 and goes a very long way. Keep the lid on tight and it does not harden or cure out. Any paint brush you use gets thrown out. The product cures by solvent evaporation so make sure you have good ventilation!!!
Your local RV dealer will have this product in their RV catalog.

Oh hey. I'll try that out before going through the glass change nightmare. If it does't work I'm no farther behind than I already am.
