I found that I have a VMSpc model JR500 J1708 Interface Board, v.2.01 software v1.10 in my motorhome. I would like to use this with my HP dv6-1245dx laptop, running Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit, which has no serial ports. Will this VMSpc unit work with my laptop with the proper Serial-to-USB adapter? If so, then is there a recommended adapter that works well with Windows 8.1 Pro, 64 bit?
I am anxious to use VMSpc, and would like to us this unit, if it will work well, instead of purchasing an entirely new cable assembly.
(I posted this question on the SilverLeaf VMSpc Forum, but I have found the information available here to be extremely valuable, as well, and so I appreciate any insight!)
Thanks!
I bought a Prolific serial to usb cable and use it with my VMSpc about half the time... I have a wonderful old HP Omnibook 800CT that has no USB ports, so that is the usual computer sitting on the dash, but I have also used the serial to usb cable ...with Win 98 and WinXP computers that had no serial ports.
Buy one from ebay for a few dollars (cheap still works the same), then hunt for the prolific drivers online. No WIN8 to try here, tho, so you can break the ground with that OS!!

I have a USB to Serial adapter that came with drivers. It is plug and play for newer operating systems. It does not say it specifically works with W8 but I would be surprised if it didn't. I have read reviews that say it does.~$16.
