Title: 2014 Grandvention, Shawnee OK in mid October
Post by: bill & jan velting on June 09, 2014, 09:12:31 am
Is it too early to begin a thread on those planning to attend this year?

We went to our first one in TN last year due in part with the location and our Motorcade discount coupon.  The event was very informative and a lot of fun.  It's very different to see an RV park with so many vintage and newer Foretravels!  We get a kick walking through the park and admiring the different styles/models along with meeting some very interesting people.

We plan on attending again this year as we'll be in Nacagdoches for a headlight conversion by Xtreme the week prior.  Perhaps those involved with Foreforums could once again show their colors with the windshield placard?

Hope to see many of you there...
Bill & Jan

We too had a good time last year at the GV and met many great folks.  And it's never too early to do a little planning!

Except we just got back from a 2 month trip thru New Mexico and the surrounding area so I'll have to wait a bit before diving into plans for fall.  The DW likes to travel but she also like to be home. ;D Timing is everything.  :P

Well, interesting that we plan to be in Rogers AR at that time for the birth of another grandchild.  Depending on when that happens, (early Oct.????), we could take a few days and attend that event.  We have never done that and it would be a very informative and social time.  How do we get the necessary details on this event??  Thanks and have a great day  ----  Fritz

Contact Beverly in the Motorcade office at Foretravel.  She can give you all the information but you can register a bit late for it if you need too. It is not like they fill up but if you let her know she can get a packet made up for you maybe and all you will have to do is call and pay..

Hi folks,

We just got our first Foretravel (and first RV) in May and have been thinking strongly about attending the Grandvention in OK. This will probably be our first "real" trip and we are really looking forward to it. I've contacted Beverly at FOT regarding registration, but I'm looking for information about any programs or seminars they might offer. We are definitely in the learning mode and are anxious to attend anything they might present. Was going to call Beverly, but I think from the Facebook postings she is on the Alaska trip. Have done some cursory reviews, but haven't found any articles in the magazine.

Can anyone chime in about past Grandventions? Do they offer any seminars on the many Foretravel systems, driving suggestions, general tips on maintenance and setup, etc.? I'm really interested in things like having the coach accurately weighed so I can fine tune tire pressures.

Above all, we are really interested in meeting some of you fine folks.

Would appreciate any comments.

Many thanks and a belated Happy 4th to all!

Don & Nancy

We are planning on going. Having some final mods made at MOT to our new-to-us Nimbus. Expect to be going back down in a couple of weeks to pick up the coach and will register at that point. Looking forward to meeting fellow Foretravelers and taking as many seminars as the two of us can work in.

Well, rats. :(

We were trying everything we could to get to our first Grandvention. Looks like it just is not in the cards. We had an issue arise with the clockspring mechanism in our steering wheel and it grounded our coach for over two months while another was being manufactured. Finally got on the road for our first trip, leaving from MOT this morning (after their usual fantastic service and support--despite being held captive, along with us, by the parts manufacturer). Unfortunately, we have some business to take care of in Colorado that must be done before the Grandvention. Was no problem on our original schedule, but the additional delays have cut it too short.

I hope everyone has a great time. We were so looking forward to meeting fellow Foretravelers. Everyone we have met to date has been super nice and so helpful. We've put 2015 Grandvention on our schedule--maybe by then it will be an event to meet up with old friends we've met on the road!

We wish all a safe journey with nothing but enjoyable memories.

Don and Nancy

Sorry to see you will not be there Don, I was hoping to meet up with you but we can always meet up one day in VA.

I will be leaving for OK tomorrow and will be at twin fountains for a couple days prior. Decided to stay there instead of going in early so we could visit some friend who live over that way and it will save 30 miles of driving.

I am at Twin Fountains and it is a very nice park. It has great wifi and nice hookups and a nice concrete pad. I hope the GV location is as nice.

The Heart of Oklahoma website states they have WiFi. The pictures appear to show the pads to be grass or gravel. I do not think it will be as nice as Twin Fountains. However, I have never been to either one.

Twin Fountains is a nicely landscaped and laid out park. Roads are wide and easy to back into my site. The sites all seem to have a nice level spot int he middle of about 40 feet so even the longest rig can be level pretty easily. The approach is concrete too. The wifi is good and the power and water as well. There are two sewer connections a site too. It seems that they are a bit too far back and too far forward for a long Motorhome but for a class C or 5th wheel they would be in the right place.  I will dump when I leave.

THere is road noise front he elevated portion of the highway right near us and the sites are pretty close together. They did use the topography well. I can sit at my picnic table and touch the guys tow vehicle that is parked in his spot.  I say that so you are aware of it.  I would be happy to stay here again.  It is really a lovely park and one of the nicest inner city parks I have seen.  I just hope the GV is at as nice a site but I fear it will not be.

As a side note on getting here. Se came from the west on 40 and when you get off the interstate on 44 north it is a left exit which is odd. Then when you go a few miles and get off on MLK you think you are  suppose to turn but you go straight across into this one lane road. Felt odd and there are no signs. The campground is up the road about a mile.

Well, the first afternoon and night is done.

We had a great dinner and a fun time playing bingo. the prizes were the best I have seen and ran the gamut from cleaning products to kindle Fire to 250 dollar parts and service certificate.  It was great to catch up with old friends and to make new ones. I will say that i fyou can make this event, you should as you will get to see and speak with lots of people who own FTs and well as lots of people from Nacogdoches.

The afternoon presentation was by Lyle Reed.  He started off saying Greg Is totally retired now.  He is stepping up to fill in again.  THat the new Realm is doing well and they are considering an entry level FT. The old line was that was our used coaches but now they might consider making a new shorter FT on another chassis. What that will be is dependent on what is decided. How will that be decided is by talking with owners and seeing what they want and if they will commit to ordering one and then they will do the engineering. It will probably have a smaller engine in it as that is the highest cost item and less slides. It might even be a 96 inch wide unit too.  Time will tell but they are thinking about it. They are building a lot of shells for two different companies.  One inOH and one in Texas. They have the first Realm out to a Nascar driver and Lyle said that MHS is a huge operation. I understand the next couple are pre sold too.

The fact that they are  producing so many shell coaches is reducing the overhead they have for the FT coach. They are only building IH models right now but will build a Nimbus or Phenix if ordered.

SO it seems that after years of asking, they are finally listening to the marketplace and looking at different options.  There was a question will you build a 38 foot Foretravel for 500K. He hemmed and hawed and wavered a bit and said then that it could not have too many slides and could not have a big engine.  It seems there is a desire for a smaller lighter coach that is still a FT and that was what most of the questions revolved around.

Thanks, John for the updates.  We were hoping to make it this year but stuff happens.  I am really missing the chance to meet the people whose names I know from the forum.  Hello to all of you!

Interesting discussion about a new entry level coach.  In another five years we might think about a newer coach like many owners.  There is very little out there we have seen that when they are 8-10 years old would appeal to us.  We will keep ours running.  The shiny hard surface look appeals to many I am sure.  I would like to see a Greene and Greene or Stickley inspired coach.  I like wood.

I've been designing and building Arts and Crafts style furniture and built-ins for more than 30 years. (Avocation)  "Life is short, the craft so long to learn".  Once we got our Foretravel and I had a close look at how things were built, I was pretty impressed. A nice quarter sawn white oak interior would be nice.  So is the cherry one we have.

Had a great presentation by James Triana.  Talked about why he has you call for assistance adn you have to leave a message. It works faster as he can prioritize them and he gets the messages as emails rather then having to listen to them.  We discussed the HWH system too and how they work and why. Not to cut a hose as they have to be the same length for the retract on the slide rooms. He discussed how to bypass the transmission interlock and the reasons you might not get a travel light.  IT is great to be able to talk to to him and get the information. It is one of the benefits of attending the GV every year to be able to have dinner or Lunch with  David or James.

THis morning Lyle Reed was talking and was shocked when people were complaining that the wait for service was 6 weeks when they called. So he asked how many had been told that and lots of hands went up.  He said he would look into it.  It is not a surprise to any of us who have been there for service that their times are stretching out and they are not full up in the bays and it loos like they have less techs in the service department too.

Oh one other piece of news that was announce is that Lance Hays, one of the three salesman  resigned over the weekend. I was not told the reason but I wonder if that if they can not sell the new Realm and they have a product that is 3-400,000 dollars more expensive then MHS is selling that they may not have as many sales.  Also, Paul Tinkle has been out for a while with triple by pass surgery too.

One of the reasons service is scheduled 6 weeks out is that they have a policy of once a coach is in they work on it till it's done. If they find an issue even if it's not part of the original work order they will add if you want. Also plenty of us get into service and keep adding to the work order. (guilty! until we run out of money or time.) They also leave room in the schedule for drop ins. I've taken advantage of this several times.

Just my opinion but I also think they book heavier early in the week to be sure they can finish the work order before the weekend.

see ya

That may be so but it is not the same issue at other places.  MOT or even Cummins when I go there for service do not push you out 6 weeks.

Yesterday afternoon we did the remodel session again.  It was much different then the last GV too. They contacted a few of us, me included, to see if we would be open to showing our coaches. They put flags on our coach and a listing on the windshield of what was done.  Then one of us stayed int he coach as we had lots of people come in.  We showed them the remodels and then David was avail to talk to them outside and give estimates. Justin also showed off a coach he painted with the matching trailer.  It was well received, fun and informative

We had a very informative presentation by one of the members today. It was all about how to get your ducks in a row paperwork wise for you death. He spelled out what to put and where to put the documents and how to do it and more importantly, what not to do.  It was a great thing and he gave out binders with about 50 pages of information and things to fill out.  Very worthwhile to sit in on and he mentioned a lot of good information.

Yesterday was an interesting day at the GV too.  We had a mens lunch where we sat around and talked FOretravels. you got to meet new people and in a men only grouping.  The women had purses and scarves and their own lunch and discussions.  IT was very nice to have time to just sit and talk to fellow FT owners and learn about them and their coaches and where they were going and where they have gone.  Then we had a great dinner a bit later on after the talk oin getting ypour ducks in a row if you were to die.  The club when all out with Clancey Davis and his band. We sang and danced for hours. Loved the music and he is very talented. I understand he has opened for a number of big named acts and is the nephew of one of the members.  I will say that for the money you spent at the GV to attend this year, you could not have gotten into a seminar on the planning and attended a concert for the total cost any cheaper and it had full hookup camping and lots of other stuff going on too.  IT has been a great GV so far and tonight is the final night and a more of a dress up dinner.  We will see the trips for next year or two and we will also get to talk to a tech again.

He sang slow ballads as well as fast songs. He ranged from driving country to the eagles to oldies rock to dancing tunes.

Being a "Newbie" for the first time at the Grandvention was a blast.  EVERYONE went out of their way to make us feel Welcomed.  We learned a lot from the seminars and met some really nice people.  The food was great and the conversations even better.  You never realize how much you "don't" know until you start talking to others who have been in their Foretravel much longer than us.  Everyone is SO willing to lend a hand and give you valuable information.  If you missed this Grandvention then you missed out.  We are looking forward to other adventures with this wonderful group of people.  Want to thank everyone for all their hospitality and hard work on this Grandvention.  It was AWESOME!!!

One thing I did notice was that Dale Kempfer from Silverleaf was installing a number of systems this time.  Normally he is troubleshooting but this time I saw him install three or four at least.
