Title: V Belts on Cat
Post by: Dan Noble on June 16, 2014, 12:30:58 pm
Hi,

Replaced my fiberglass fan blade on my 3208.  Now noticed that the two v belts on the water pump to the crank pulley "pop".  There is no idler adjustment on these.  For lack of better explanation, they sound like a separate diesel engine-higher or lower RPM doesn't change it.

Has anyone else had this happen?  Thought about belt dressing or will likely just put on a new set of belts.  With no tightening adjustment, I assume remove the blade and use a screwdriver to work the belts on and off is the proper method or ?

Thanks in advance,

If you are talking about the belts that are on the fan pulley, there is an adjustment for those belts. There are bolts that hold the fan assembly to the engine that have to be loosened and then there is a bolt on the top of the bracket that you turn to tighten the belts. If you do not understand my directions, give me a call at 813-215-3463. I am on eastern time zone.

Ron, I may call you in a couple of weeks when I am back at the farm (she's still in storage yet).  Thanks for the reply

On our 91 GV, with a 3208T, there is a way to tighten all belts.  I'm guessing that there is a way to tighten yours also.  I'd check your engine manual or talk to a Cat rep.  Have a great day  ----  Fritz

30 yrs ago, the normal belt arrangement was using either an alternator or a dummy idler to adjust the V-Belt tension on the 3208 series, automotive was the alternator, some industrial used the idler system, either way a double belt setup.
