Title: Automatic Generator Start Module- Where is it and is it adjustable?
Post by: Don & Tys on June 26, 2014, 03:09:24 pm
Title tells all ;D , except that as I get ready for my Inverter make over, I will be wanting to integrate the Magnum Auto Generator start module (networked with the Magnum Inverter and adjustable through the ARC remote)... as ours is unreliable, and as far as I can tell, not really adjustable. Could be wrong on the last part of that. Hints about replacing it would be welcome!

Don,

Here's a link to a post with a photo that shows what it looks like in a 2002 - hope this may help

Made me look.  Looks like the newer Magnum auto-starts also have a temperature control (altho I did not see where the internal temperature was sensed).  My 2002 has its autostart (adjustable voltage) under the false floor of the center console cabinet.

The manual for the DynaGen BCM wound up on Barry's site.
If your done with it, would be interested in it.

Many years ago we installed the stand alone Magnum generator auto start, and over time there have been a few discussion that you may find helpful. We know the integrated auto start is controlled a little differently, but the wiring to the generator will be the same. We connected a few wires to our manual generator dash switches. Probably no need to do anything with original auto start..

Barry, thanks for the links... I am still looking for the Dynagen auto start module though. It is not on the pull out plywood panel in the center of the dash on ours and I haven't found any false floor under that as yet. I hope I don't have to take the dash apart to find it! Anybody else with a 99' U270 care to share? Ours does have an AGS module somewhere, but it is unreliable at this point. If it is adjustable, I can't imagine it would be buried too deeply to access easily... could be wrong about that!

Don,

Ours has the Dynagen autostart module on the pull-up center board in the console  (see photos).  Since we prefer to run the generator manually, I have never used it, so don't know whether it works or not.  On my list to try it though...

Inside the control box on top of our generator, there is a mystery module which is totally disconnected, but looks like it might be an alternate autostart module (doesn't look like the Dynagen version).  You might look there for your Dynagen or equivalent if you can't find it inside the coach.

The guts of the Dynagen is in the generator control box, but I don't know how to adjust. Later coaches have a dash center bottom drawer or door, but not ours. Do you have a manual way to pre-heat, start & stop with a dash switch? If so that is the where you get the 3 wires needed to interface to autostart generator.

The actual Dynagen ES52 control module is mounted in the box on the generator on our unit and handles the preheat start sequence, detection of low oil, high heat, over-under speed detection, start retry, etc.  It has a built-in ~10 sec preheat timer (adjustable) and so we don't have anything in the cockpit but an on-off switch and a manual-automatic selector for the generator.  The module on the pull-out board in the photos is the Dynagen BCM-12 low-voltage autostart module, which looks like it simply parallels the generator on-off switch to start.

Thanks for pictures Dave. I thought your coach surely would have been the same as ours. I would have lost that bet! Ours is 81 coaches before yours but the same in so many respects. Well, at least I know what it looks like. I will just have to dig a little bit to find it. I think just tracing the wires from the auto start switch might shed some light on it.

We just have the two switches for auto start and start/stop like Dave and Nancy.

I had the same module and mine was an early model 1999 U270.
