My newly purchased ; 1992 U225 ; has a cracked exhaust manifold, does anyone know where I can get a used replacement? Cummins does not make the exact one anymore. my engine number is 44593369 if that helps. It is a 5.9 and it has been brazed previously where the crack is, it seems to run fine, altho slow to take off, it is not loud either. I thought that I had better replace it if possible, there is black soot where the crack was repaired, and thought this might effect the turbo or valves with a leak there.

Black soot will mean less boost (from the turbo) and with that, less HP. Depends on the size of the crack.
Go to Cummins forums for the 5.9. Got to be good advice there and perhaps help finding a new one. Look on ebay for a matching manifold.

here (attached) is a pic of the manifold, it looks as it was broken in 2 and brased back together.
Be aware that there are other parts (gaskets and bolts) that you should replace while doing this and they are not cheap.

If you haven't signed up for Quickserve, you should to see if you can find the rest of the parts cheaper than going through Cummins. For my manifold replacement, the associated parts ended up costing as much as the manifold through Cummins.

When we needed Cummins parts last summer, manifold, bolts, gaskets, and seals, we ordered direct from Cummins, and were offered the next day delivery program. For only 10% of the order amount total, if in stock, and ordered by 10PM, it could be delivered by noon the next day to Port Aransas TX.
We are going on vacation next week and wondered if the manifold replacement can wait, and still use the rig?
It runs great, just loosing some boost I am sure. Will it damage the engine driving as it is for a few hundred more miles? I drove the MH 1200+ miles when I picked it up (last week) to get it home before seeing the manifold crack, it ran great and got 11mpg, I just do not want to do any major damage. Thanks in advance!
Well I found a mechanic on craigslist and had him come out to remove the exhaust manifold. He had it out in 1.5 hrs (he said the book said 3 hrs labor) he only charged me $120 to remove it no broken bolts!, I thought that was a great deal! He said I did a lot by soaking w/ pb blaster the last 3 days.
I have the used manifold from ebay on the way and expect it Tuesday(thx to forum member rsihnold), he said he will install it for $80 more when I get it. He recommended using the same bolts, that they were in excellent shape and they are hardened, so I am going with the same original bolts. Picking up gaskets Monday and hopefully we will be ready for vacation nnext week! Thanks everyone! this forum is the greatest!
No, I would NOT use the old bolts. Go back with new of exactly the same ones. Should not be that much money at a bolt warehouse.
Be sure to check the used manifold on known straight edge and feeler gauge to see if it needs to be surfaced before installation.
I would also have Cummins recommended torque values handy along with torque wrench if your tech does not have one.
And, you absolutely did correctly by soaking the bolts-- that is the secret to an easy removal! Actually, I soak (use 50/50 ATF and acetone) and then strike the head of the bolt with a small ball peen hammer (shock some of the rust loose), repeat for several days. Very rare to have one break if you do this.
