We replaced our Dometic Refrigerator with a Samsung residential and could not be happier with the results. We secured the bottom with wooden "shoes" that prevent it from moving in any direction and the top with two 2 x 4's secured to the ceiling and angle aluminum on the top of the refrigerator with double sided tape. We screwed the angle aluminum to the 2x4's and it is rock solid.
I have what appears to be the same unit in my coach. You are going to love it. Best upgrade yet.
Do you guys dry camp much?
What model Dometic did you remove? And which model did you install. We are dealing with sizes issues.
And if you removed a RM 7832, might you still have the old unit? I am still looking for door top lock parts, the ice bucket and wire shelf.
Exactly what we want to do. How did you get it thru the window? Also, do you remember what the dimensions of the rough window opening are?
Dave and Dolly, we are removing an RM7130 if that is of any use to you.
Let me look up your model and see if your's might have what I am needing.
A quick look shows you have a different wire shelf, and ice bin. I was unable to see if your's had a top lock that flipped down to lock both doors.
The Samsung we are looking at is a "counter depth" model that is only 32.25" wide but looks just like the one Bob and Ruth just installed
No we don't. I thought a lot about electrical loads, inverters , batteries etc. but we live in Texas and run the generator most of the time while traveling because A/C is a must the majority of the time. With that in mind I decided to not worry about dry camping and just enjoy having a proper refrigerator. I have no regrets.
Did you use the same 110v wire that powered the Dometic, or something else?
Yes we used the 110V power supply that the Dometic was on. There was 2 circuits in there, one was only fed from shore power/generator and the other was shore/generator/inverter. No, the old refrigerator is gone (lock was broken :o ). We took the old frig out and new one in through the window. The opening was at least 27". So much easier getting the units out through the window (with 5 guys helping). No, we don't dry camp much as I am usually working for several months at hospitals :)) Faith
We love ours.
How does the window come out?
To take out the window remove all the retaining ring screws. If the window has never been removed the original putty will still be holding it in place. Carefully work a putty knife around the outside flange of the window to loosen. Then lift the window out. You may have to put some gentle pressure on the inside of the window to loosen it as well but be careful not to push so hard it falls out ;D
Hi Dave and Dolly, we installed a Samsung RF197ACRS/xaa. After playing refrigerator Jenga for 5 1/2 years we are extremely happy with all the space ;)
Hello Elliott,
Note and a word of caution, the window is very heavy and the removal is definitely a two person job...
Never did myself but watched procedure during window removal for the "creeps" fix.
Tony
I had the dinette window replaced recently. And the tech used a heat gun to loosen the sealing material and then thin putty knife and finally a pocket knife or box cutter. The reason he gave was it is real easy to damage the fiberglass. Especially if one pushes from the inside before it is completely loose. When the window was loose, he continue to work around the outside frame till it was loose from the fiberglass. The retainer ring uses tiny screws that are easy to twist off with a power driver, so I would loosen with a Phillips screwdriver first. I would also, if I was doing it replace the retainer ring screws with new screws.
Thanks for the info. I had looked at that model, but have not looked at how the almost 5" of door beyond the cabinet will effect our walk space. The specs. show the counter depth would work, but the total depth is 30" into our narrow hall and center pantry on our mid-door floor plan.
Mine is narrow too but the harrowing is worth the new fridge.
Thanks for window removal tips.
I'll give the refer decision a little more time to percolate.
Mary says not till Dometic goes.
This thread comes at a good time (or bad time, depending on viewpoint). Our Dometic RM7030 just quit cooling the last couple days. Plugged in to 50 amp, or on gas, doesn't matter...with the thermostat set on MAX, it is running about 25 degrees F in the freezer section, 75 F in the fridge side. Coach is level, everything "appears" to be operating normally, AC heaters are hot, gas flame is nice clean blue, flue is clear, etc. Called Dinosaur to ask about a new board, their tech said my board is working fine, but the cooling unit (which was replaced a 15 months ago by the PO) is getting plugged up and failing. Sigh...
Read all the old posts on repairing Dometic versus replacing with residential unit. We decided to go residential. Read more old posts, decided for our coach the only two practical choices are either the little 24" wide 11.0 cu ft Whirlpool used by several forum members (current model # WRT111SFA), or the Samsung RF197 recommended by Bob and Faith at the start of this thread. We had pretty much decided on the Samsung, even though it would be a tight fit and cost us some storage space. Then I decided to read the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, and started having second thoughts. They are terrible! Especially on Amazon, where it got 2 stars and only had 2 good reviews out of 23. I can discount a few bad reviews, but this is way above the norm even for Amazon.
SO, my question goes out to any members who have installed this particular model (Samsung RF197, any color): have you had any trouble? Would prefer hearing from those members who have had it running for several months or more, so it has been bumped around a bit going down the road. I want to like this fridge, but I don't want to waste our money. There are so few units made that fit into our floor plans - it would be a shame to have to reject this choice.

If you haven't already done so, turn the refrigerator off now and keep it off.
Mine was acting exactly as yours is now just before it caught fire.
The RF197 is probably one of the most common residential fridges used in RVs. Looking at some of the more generic RV forums, it's the model of choice for many DP manufacturers.
Not sure how representative Amazon reviews (especially for items sold by other than Amazon) are for large appliances. I can't imagine the usual large appliance purchase is from there - more likely Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, Best Buy, etc. Only 23 reviews on Amazon pretty much shows the low volume there.
I would look at reviews on the big box merchants' sites and maybe snoop around rv.net and irv.com for comments.
Tom,
Thanks for the warning! I was already aware of your excellent thread concerning the fire, and yesterday I told my wife we sure as heck didn't want to go through that!
It is totally shut down at this time.
Chuck, seriously I cannot understand how 2 people need the space of the Samsung or similar model, even if fulltiming. I would guess that almost all are within a short drive of a store etc that there is no need for a massive stocking up of food. When we are on the road for 3 or 4 months we have no problems at all with the fear of running out of food etc. Ruth loves to have plastic containers of left overs etc which take up space too. We do not have a basement freezer/fridge like some do and manage, but I guess it is something you cannot give up if you have a monster of a fridge in your house.
Most people (we do not) have a dishwasher in their s&b but not in coach so how do they handle that one?? The smaller Whirlpool that we have has plenty of room for what is important but there you are, everyone is different I guess. We like the slide out storage than more room in the cooler.

John,
I know you are one of the proponents of the smaller 11.0 cu ft Whirlpool fridge, and I take everything you say to heart. We spent half the day today out in the coach, taking measurements of the existing RM7030, looking at the internal space configuration, thinking about how much food we really need to carry with us. We kept going back and forth between the Whirlpool and the Samsung. The little fridge would be a much easier install, would make room for additional storage (my wife loves the additional slide out pantry you added), and is of course much cheaper. BUT, the old RM7030 was about 8.5 cu ft (total), and we are always griping about not having enough room in it (especially the freezer). I guess we are, like you said, spoiled by having a big fridge at home. Moving from 8.3 to 11.0 cu ft doesn't seem like much improvement, although the space might be arranged in a more useful shape. The Samsung, on the other hand, gives you twice as much space as the old fridge, which seems like a lot more "worthwhile" upgrade. We would lose storage space below the fridge, but we could get rid of the old stand-alone ice maker under the hutch, and convert that to storage for a break-even. I don't know...it is a tough decision, and we haven't made up our minds yet. Fortunately, it is not a emergency situation, and we have time to ponder all the variables.
Tim,
Thanks for the links - I will check them out tomorrow. I did take Michelle's suggestion, and went to rv.net, searched for RF197. Came up with 3 pages of links to threads - read them all - they were 99% positive in favor of the Samsung. I don't know what the deal is with the Amazon reviews, but I'm a lot less worried about them now. Another example of why you have to be careful about seeking advice/opinions on the internet. Except, of course, for what you read on ForeForums! I know I always get the straight scoop here! ^.^d
You can't imagine how pleased I am to hear that. I want everyone to stay safe.
Exactly :) It depends on your eating/cooking/shopping style. We aren't stocked like a couple of "preppers", just basic ingredients for all our meals. Perhaps it's that we don't shop daily for groceries, just roughly once a week for everything and stops at farm stands if we're out and about (produce takes up a lot of space).
Refrigerator Jenga - love it!
Chuck, if you decide to go with the Samsung we found the best price with US Appliance online. Free shipping and no tax plus they will match the price of any competitor with an additional 10% off. Total cost was @1150.00. So far the unit has been working great and we are very happy with it ^.^d
For those of you who may be considering a residential refrigerator, and are leaning toward the smaller 24" wide 11.0 cu ft Whirlpool recommended by John Haygarth and others, I have good news! I was poking around the local appliance dealers today, checking models in stock, colors, etc. No luck finding a Whirlpool, but at the Sears store I found a clone of the Whirlpool, being sold under the Kenmore brand. It exactly matches the Whirlpool WRT111SFAF in all dimensions, has the exposed coils on the back, and looks the same inside (best I can tell). It is currently on sale locally. The Kenmore model numbers and list and sale prices are given below. It's always nice to have another source when shopping for products!
Kenmore model 86393 (Stainless), list price = $662.99, sale price = $530.39
Kenmore model 86392 (Black), list price = $539.99, sale price = $431.99
Kenmore model 86399 (White), list price = $539.99, sale price = $431.99
We came up with this idea for keeping the doors closed while traveling. Hopefully it won't damage the finish on the doors ::)
Bob, looking at that idea of yours I have a question. Does it actually keep the doos/drawer tight shut or do they open a touch then close again? The drawer at the bottom seems to me to be the tough one to keep shut due to the length of those "legs"?
neat looking though.
When we are away we do not go shopping each day but maybe twice a week, except for fresh sea food or the like from local butchers and markets. Thankfully everyone is different or the world would be boring.
JohnH
Hi John
No the bottom drawer does open slightly and then close again unfortunately. It will keep it from slamming open but other than screwing a bracket to the side this seemed like the least invasive option. We'll see how it works when we hit the road again in 3 months. Perhaps we can come up with something better for the drawer by then.
See post
Residential fridge (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=13454.msg131468#msg131468)
for how our frig doors and drawer are kept closed.
Over at iRV2.com/THE OWNER'S CORNER FORUMS/Monaco Owner's Forum I found a thread covering the installation of a RF197 in great detail (13 pages):
Samsung RF197 installed in 2006 Diplomat 40PDQ - iRV2 Forums (http://www.irv2.com/forums/f115/samsung-rf197-installed-in-2006-diplomat-40pdq-102210.html)
On Page 1, Post #10, the OP describes his door & drawer retaining system, using "Mooring Fender Locks" from the Bass Pro Shop, and black nylon straps and buckles.
Just another clever idea to ponder.
Link below is to the photos that illustrate the concept - they are pretty much self-explanatory:
Picasa Web Albums - Robert Nodine - Travel Straps (https://picasaweb.google.com/102818402720431077518/TravelStraps)
Yes, it definitely is a challenge and it keeps the gray matter working! We may run two strips of Velcro attached to the base platform and run it up to the carpeted wood bracket. Not 100% sure yet but right now this idea seems to keep it pretty tight but time will tell.
PRICE REDUCTION ALERT!!! For those of you (like us) who may be considering the purchase of a Samsung RF197, GOOD NEWS! Home Depot has this model (all 4 colors) on sale through 08/06/2014 for
$987.30. I have not checked with US Appliance (yet), but if they honor their "110% Low Price Guarantee" then that would bring the price down to about $890(+ $49 shipping) =
$940. ^.^d
Must have meant 09/06/2014?
Roland
Bob/Faith, on your model can you see the back of the drawer from the rear of fridge ie Looking thru the back vent/access door. If so I may be able to suggest a locking system for the drawer that will hold it tight while travelling, then your handle design will be better.
JohnH
Put a sliding door lock on the wall and drilled into the freezer door and put the other side with small screws. Holds well.
Yes so did I. One note, all refrigerator and freezer doors today have a vacuum inside the door for insulating efficiency. David Flanigan at Grandvention LOVED my sliding door lock. Called manufacturer and was told drilling holes in door would void warranty. So FT won't do it.
I had already drilled mine. FWIW. So far no issue.
Not sure if JB weld or similar would hold well enough to not require drilling. Love the sliding door lock as a latch.
VHB tape? So far, at least for me, that stuff has turned out to be amazing. It's all that's holding our solar panels to the rooftop of the RV. We let it sit and bond for a couple of weeks before driving around with it but it's been rock-solid. Just checked it yesterday. It's also holding down the wire-clips to keep the wires from rattling around.
DW just reminded me that we found VHB tape did not stick well to wood.

No, I meant

Oh Crap, I thought we were in was August, not July when this was posted. :headwall:
Roland
That's OK, Roland...I am also starting to suffer from "Oldtimer's" disease. :))
The lock/catch I am sauggesting does not get drilled into door etc it is installed at the rear of fridge.
John H
Chuck,it's not Oldtimer's it's Sometimer's, some time's I remember some time's I don't, where is the funny face key.
We have decided to replace the dead Dometic with a Samsung RF197 (still trying to decide on color). I called FOT to see about getting it installed. They are very busy, and can't get us in until the second half of September. That's OK - we'd rather wait and get it done right, plus we want to get a few other small mods done at the same time. David F. did say it would be fine with him if we buy the fridge now, while it's on sale, and have it delivered to their shop. They will store it until we get there for the installation. That will save us about $250 - which will just about pay for the fuel to drive over there and back. Meanwhile, if we want to go anywhere, I guess we'll have to use our big wheeled ice chest. At least our ice maker still works - it'll keep us supplied with ice!
I ordered mine and had it delivered to the shop. They had one or two there when I was there in July and in January.
Ditto, I did same at Parliament with my ref ridge before it was installed
An unexpected benefit of our new fridge is the reflectivity that the stainless finish has. It bounces more light into the galley, making is appear more spacious, and brightens the passage towards the bathroom.
before (the is closest thing I could find, unfortunately taken with the slides in and the coach indoors):

after:
What are some models and brands you have installed?? Samsung or Whirlpool or what?
Michelle,
Thanks for those photos - they really help us visualize the change. We have eliminated "Black" for the very reason you state - way too sombre and dark. We are presently torn between "Stainless" and 'White". I see you have replaced both fridge and microwave with coordinating colors. We are thinking we might go ahead and also get our microwave replaced while we have the opportunity at FOT, so we would also want the colors of both appliances to match. Our old microwave is white, and our kitchen counter tops and (new) kitchen faucet are also white. We feel a white fridge/microwave set would fit in nicely, but we wonder if it would look too "Old Fashioned". A new stainless fridge and microwave would look more "Modern" and "High Tech", but wouldn't really go with anything else in our 21 year old coach. DECISIONS, DECISIONS...
Any thoughts you might have on the matter would be appreciated - your coach is a beauty to behold, so you obviously have good fashion sense!
Take a look at kitchen remodel magazines - color actually going back - black and white - that being said - we did stainless refrigerator, and a year later added the stainless GE Advantium too
We are going to look at the 17.8 cu ft Samsung this weekend. The price is appealing. We are leaning toward the Platinum. It might be easier to keep smudge free. I am taking a fridge magnet along to make sure they stick. Not sure if they will on SS. Maybe that is a good thing.
Roger
Dan,
If you'll read through this whole thread from the first post, you'll get some really good ideas on popular "replacement" models.
Agreed. Our fridge in our house is so covered up with magnetic stick-ons that I can't even tell
what color it is!
Roger,
We thought about the Platinum, but eliminated it because the replacement over-the-range microwave oven that best fits into our existing "cut-out" space does not come in that shade. We are looking at the Sharp R-1871 (White) or R-1874 (Stainless). This model also comes in Black and Bisque, but not Platinum.
You could do a quick mock-up of each. Tape some aluminum foil over the current fridge/micro (dull side out) to visualize stainless, then repeat using white paper (like butcher paper or even printer paper). I think either would work nicely. Our coach has brushed nickel hardware throughout so stainless was the obvious choice for us.
That's an excellent point, Michelle, and I'm often baffled as to why so few people mention lighting effects.
I also wholeheartedly agree with Chuck's point regarding staying in keeping with the overall tone and demeanor of the interior design. Using a mirror ball as the centerpiece in a Shaker Design may very well make one or the other look totally out of place (I'm being facetious, but it's sort of like my Black Ekornes Chair and Footstool looks out of place in the following pictures).
When we purchased our coach, we had been looking for a used 40' GV for years and we were stubbornly focused on the dark mahogany interior (we still find them rich). The lighter colored interiors had not been offered yet, and we
thought that we had no interest in oak. It turns out that much of that mindset was built up from not having closely examined the differences between the quality of the Oak and the cabinetry design/craftsmanship in a FT vs. SOB's.
But, one of the very distinct "Aha" moments for us, was when we first walked into a FT with an oak interior. It was amazingly fresh and bright. I know that many do not see, feel or appreciate the same brightness and cheeriness associated with the use of light oak and the liberal use of beveled mirrors, but to us it was a clear choice. The later Cherry and Maple interiors have the same effect on us.
Here are recent pictures taken of our interior, inside a warehouse, at night (zero available outside light), with an iPhone, using available light, without any flash, to demonstrate the point. The fluorescent lighting contributes some "funky" coloration and shadows, but the interior remains bright and welcoming, even absent daylight. Add daylight and day/night MCD's and it only improves from these poorly lit conditions.
Neal
I worked as a Commercial Photographer for over 25 years. During that time I spent A LOT of time photographing stainless and chrome objects. Chrome or any reflective surface does not have a color, it takes on what ever color or tone that reflects into it. This changes constantly as your eyes change angles to the object.
Michelle's suggestion of the foil is a good one to test the actual look in your refrigerator position. Surrounded by dark walnut, a dark floor, and trapped in a narrow hallway might NOT show off your stainless fridge as nicely as it looked in the showroom.
Different Twist ?
How do you remove finger smudges from the bright stainless finish ? Tried using 409 glass surface cleaner with no luck, it works great on windshield removing bugs ;D
Lemon Pledge, microfiber cloth (or a cast-off white T-shirt).
Knew you had the magic, I'm off to Wally World, looking for the Lemon Pledge & microfiber cloth.
Thanks.
I just get the big package of microfiber cloths from the automotive section...
Try lemon pledge furniture polish. Not a joke. Same stuff is the goods on plexiglass too
And granite. Really brings out the depth of the stone.
The key to decreasing smudging on stainless is to have a very thin coating of oil on it. That's what the Pledge does.
They make stainless cleaner too (pledge) but original lemon pledge covers wood, stainless steel and plexiglass ( don't laugh, try it!) without need for multiple cans of stuff
Thanks Tim, ran down and tried it out on the fogged up convertible vinyl window. Magic! Looks almost new and could barely see thru it before.
Well, for those of you who were anxiously awaiting the news, we finally made our decision! We will go with the stainless Samsung RF197. We will also replace our old microwave with a stainless Sharp R-1874. This is the exact same combo shown in the great photos by Bob and Faith, who started this thread. We ordered both items from Home Depot today (to get them on sale), and they will be delivered to FOT next week. Our appointment with David F. and his crew is in September, for the installation + some "storage" mods.
Thanks to all for the good advice, photos and info!
