Title: Leaking windshield
Post by: 4stakes on July 25, 2014, 02:41:51 pm
I have 2 small areas on the top of my windshield that leak when it rains hard.  The windshield itself is fine with no cracks.  Has anyone solved this problem by just having the rubber gaskets changed or does it usually require changing everything?
Can any windshield repair place do this or should it be a motorhome specific place?
Thanks,
Kearn

Many have had just the gaskets either reset, or just the gaskets replaced.  Your glass units are $1,200 each side, ouch.

Reseat them first and see if that fixes it.

I would visit an auto glass shop and see if they can seal it for you.
When I had both windshields replaced there was a little bit of leaking in the upper outside corners of each side.  I called the installer back out and he injected just a little bit of sealer in the affected area and no more leaks.

If you can locate the leak spot, put some sealant around the outside of the gasket. We like clear GE II Silicone, but are not sure how well it sticks to the rubber gasket. Maybe lift the gasket edge and put silicone in the gap.

My windshield was leaking also, or so I thought. Like described it only leaked in a heavy rain or when underway.  I sealed the windshield gasket as described above to no avail.  I discovered the rain was coming in a marker light after sealing them with silicone.  I do not know which one as I removed and sealed them all. Haven't had a drop in since.  David

Our windshield leaked when rainwater got "trapped" between the windshield and the windshield cover. I purchased a quart of Geocel ProflexRV multi-purpose brushable repair coating (that's the full title on the can) crystal clear. It stops leaks, stays elastic, paintable, applies to wet surfaces, prevents rust, mildew resistant, and probably could drive your coach for you. But honestly, I put masking tape 1/8" away from the glass and then brushed the sealer on. No leaks since and we have had some pretty heavy downpours. I also brushed the sealer around the shower skylight and no leaks since. We purchased a quart from Tweety's Rv sales between Bulverde and Boerne in Texas for around $20 even tho their catalog showed around $28/qt. I only used about 1" out of the can so have plenty left over for other leaks as they might occur. Make sure to use a cheap brush as you cannot salvage it after use. The sealer air dries quickly.

I too have used it and agree it works. Only thing to remember is if it is going to rain within 12 hrs DO NOT use it or you will spend hours cleaning your windshield as this stuff makes a real mess of the glass/paint.

Marker lights are often a source of water leak. They don't have great gaskets and they are screwed into holes cut in cap, where the back side is inside the coach above the windshield, where the electronics are located.

If there are marker leaks, accessing the area from the inside will show the leak area.

The corner  markers, above the windshield really don't fit that well.. The cap is slightly curved, the markers are flat. Thats the first place i would check... I replaced my lights and was quite surprised with the way the end lights fit.....

I talked to my local repair shop as STUMP suggested. He directed me to the only shop he trusted 45 miles away for my vent windows slide issue... sent pictures, he gave me a ballpark 250-350...

Windshield out, weld the vertical stop ($50).. TOTAL $325

No leaks no wind noise ^.^d
