Title: Collective forum knowledge (split from Re: Poor Man's Silverleaf)
Post by: Gary Bouland (RIP) on July 26, 2014, 09:21:37 am
One of the things that most irritates me about our "new-to-us" 2003 Foretravel is the lack of transmission gear readout.

So, I decided to build my own system to read the information from the J1587 data bus and display it on an Android tablet mounted on the dash.

With all the skills here I bet we could all meet somewhere and with our specialties BUILD a new FT over a weekend.  Might be fun.

If FOT realized the huge technical committee that they had in this forum, used the feedback that we discuss, adapted some of the upgrades that we innovated, and decided to go back into the smaller "in demand" coaches, not only would we beat a path back to them when we upgraded, the world would find them, eliminating the spectra of becoming insolvent.

Michael,

Are you suggesting with this post that you have valid info ration regarding FOT's financial standing?  If so, please provide, if not, speculation on their profitability  and solvency would seem to be damaging to the /corperation/brand and inappropriate for this venue.

I do however share with you the vast FOT knowledge and loyalty shown on this forum.

Mike, I believe that all big corporations tend to ignore innovations from individuals, all my working life I found quicker, easier, more profitable ways to do things but the powers that be adopted very few of them.  Just the way business operates.  I doubt that FT is going anywhere, latest news indicates that they have new product lines and service is doing very well.

That is funny,  Picture a Motor Home Designed by 20 Engineers, one side would have 3 slides, 7 wheels, other side 4 slides and 1 wheel, Can picture it now, Energy saving natural gas engine that could only be refueled at 3 stations in the country and give you 2 mpg.
God help us. :o
I see humor in such fantasy.

Be nice to us old engineers.  The only reason your Foretravel works as well as it does is because of clever, thoughtful engineers, great craftsmen and the care and feeding you have given it. Go ahead and say anything you want to about sales and marketing types.

The only comment I have is that if the sales dep't does not sell any the engineers will be laid off (incl' everyone)

I subscribe to the idea that maintenance/upgrades will never be easy and correct until engineers are made to do maintenance on their products...

Duanne, I agree with you completely. Working in the auto assembly plants for 30 yrs I always said that a new engineer should put in a 2 yr apprentice program actually working on the systems that they had designed. Needless to say that didn't happen. On the other hand, I made a lot of money and had a great career fixing their "better ideas" ^.^d ^.^d
