Title: Thinking about selling our FT....
Post by: 96u270 on July 29, 2014, 02:38:04 pm
Hello folks....The wife and I have found our selves talking about selling the FT and moving on to new ventures,,what we don't know. But I can say we have loved our FT and it has been awesome for the past 5 years but we have slowed down on our travels in the past year or so.... Thinking I'm going to list on CL but have no idea what a 96 U270 with 80,000 miles is going for now days.. A couple of years ago I took it up to Xtreme in Nacogdoches for The headlight conversion, I'm the second owner, we have put 20,000 miles on it in 5 years
Anyone have any ideas?? Just trying to find ball park??? all input is welcome

There was a 1996 U270 on Ebay up until a few days ago. They had a $30,000 reserve and got no bids, and it didn't sell. It had 102,000 miles on it. Can't account for what condition it's in, but here is a link to it.

Based on the exterior, it looks very nice. Wish we were ready to begin serious shopping instead of just browsing, but we're probably a couple of years away.

You might want to think of calling MoT and consigning it. They sell them pretty fast and you won't have to deal with all the idiots. I believe they even arrange pick-up.

I bought my 98 2 years ago for $36,000 and it didn't have the headlight upgrade or look quite as nice on the exterior as this one. If its been well maintained and with newer tires, etc., I would think they would have no trouble getting more than that if they were willing to wait for the right buyer.

You can also get a fair appraisal from PPL in Houston, they sell a ton of motor homes, including Foretravel.

It's Probably a good idea to get an appraisal from PPL or MOT, since you're not that far from there, and then you'll have a pretty good idea what to ask, and what to expect. I think it might be a worth while to list it on this forum, prior to consigning it, since you have a very precise audience of Foretravel aficionados. If anyone is going to appreciate it, and buy it because it's a Foretravel, and because it's like buying it from a friend, it will be someone on this forum.

I would also suggesting posting it here first since there are a number of folks looking and you are much less likely to be on the receiving end of scammers (only registered members can see the information here, unlike CL or even RVT).

Just so everyone knows, I E-mailed MOT 10 days ago regarding a ballpark value and no response as of today.... I think I will list it here first and see what happens. I want everyone to know that I'm not so worried about making lots of $$$ on this deal but more looking for some one to get this coach and find enjoyment using it like my family did....
Again thanks for all the feedback.

Be sure to mention in your ad any optional equipment that did not come standard in a 96 U270. For instance I recently looked at a 96 U295 and when I climbed up on the roof I saw a solar panel that the owner apparently did not know was there. I pointed it out to him and he replied 'Oh I guess I should have put it in the ad". Or I believe all U270 models came with a retarder but the 6 position joystick can be added aftermarket.
Just my two cents Good luck Ed

When I was trying to sell my 280 I left messages with MOT that were never returned also. Finally I called and asked specifically for David Robertson, he eventually called back. My opinion is that they are not interested in older coaches unless they are giveaways and their main interest ( which I understand ) is collecting their minimum 3500 dollar fee. Gary B

When I first tried to contact them about selling our U320 I used the contact page on their web site. That message apparently fell into the bit bucket and Jason said they had been having trouble with that feature. A more reliable way to contact them by e-mail would be to send the message to jasonh@motorhomesoftexas.com.

Cannot sell warranties and cannot easily finance older coaches. As-is, where is bulk sale for green money.
Which is why this forum helps all of us. Fixes for most everything and a support group.
Allows us here to drive old fancy rv's and pay a lot less per mile for fun....

Times have certainly changed. Two years ago both MOT and FOT had lots of GVs on their websites for sale. Back then a $20,000 sale was still better than no sale. Not any more, I guess.
Advertising here is a plus, in my opinion. Owners who are members of this forum are more likely to at least understand their rigs better. :)

List the coach here, with several pictures and lots of details. I found our coach here.
(In our case the seller listed it here, which then provided a link to an excellent Website he had created. The Website had great pictures and complete, detailed information.)

I was at motorcycle dealership the other day. They won't take Harley's in on trade because they can't get financing for buyers on used Harleys. No financing (even in the 5-10k range) means no sale.
I think the same is true for RV's. Over 10years is difficult (if not impossible) to finance. Getting much over 15, I think there just isn't enough fat in the deal for a place like MOT to make a profit. The article somebody posted about them recently specifically stated they are not trying to sell on volume, but quality.

I know the owner is located in the Corpus Christie area of TX. We met one day last January for a long lunch, a very amazing guy.
I'll second that. This fellow could probably build a Foretravel from scratch....and improve it. He has a fascinating job that relies on field innovation and problem solving in high pressure, dangerous, challenging environments.

So how do those of us who do not yet own an FT found out about those coaches that do not make the website? We're still a ways away from making a purchase, but it would be nice to be armed with the information. Do we ask to be put on an e-mail list so we're alerted whenever a "new" coach comes on the lot they think we'd be interested in? (Perhaps I answered my own question. :) )

You need to establish a relationship with someone in sales. They need to know what you are looking for, and they need to know you will actually buy the right coach when they find it for you. They know what is heading their way long before it even gets listed.

Contact them when you are ready to buy. Talk to one of the sales guys. I referred a number of people to Stewart. He will call you when they have a coach coming in. Lots of time it is someone moving up and they do it that way rather then buying the trade themselves. So the exact arrival date is fuzzy. Also, I had friends by a new coach that came in. They were looking for one and mot picked it up and drove it on the lot on Sunday evening. It was sold Monday morning to my buddy as it was what they were looking for. Never hit the website.

When we were buyers, not lookers, we worked with Mel Cordray at MOT. He e-mailed us about several coaches, that met our listed needs. We had been in to see him twice, and he worked with us for 9 months with notices of early coach info.
To think they can do that for evey one is maybe impossible. If you are years from purchase, what is going to be offered for sale tomorrow is not going to mater much. Watch what comes around on their site, and go see one, to see if you are even chasing the correct brand. Being so far from purchasing would frustrate me perhaps more than help, as I see the "perfect" coach show up, when I can not do anything.
My coach became available, I was ready to step up. We saw ours while traveling, and made the deal with the seller as he traded it in at FOT a week later on his visit. I bought the new coach, the day after we got the call, and thus become a two Foretravel owner. After seeing and buying the coach at FOT, I stopped by to see Mel, he knew I had captured the U295 when MOT did not have a deal for my seller. We had found our gem, and stepped up in 24 hours. I was really sorry that he was not the salesman on the deal, and that MOT was not involved, after all the work Mel had done to help us.
Watching the market is good and frustrating, but grabbing the right coach is timing and luck. We were lucky to be in the RV park in the Hill Country on vacation, to first see, tour, leave a card contact. Then get the call about a coach that was "not for sale this year" on a Tuesday, and being offered it on Sat. when they fell in love with a new Foretravel in NAC.

We did the same. At the beginning of our hunt we took a trip from Chicago to MOT and FOT to see what was on their lots. Established a relationship in person with Tyle at FOT and Mel at MOT.
From that point forward both worked hard and sent us advanced noticed of potential coaches with whatever details we requested. Luck of the draw that the coach we ended up with came from FOT, but it was not from lack of effort on Mel's part to find the right coach for us.

Walt Getting on MOT's mailing list gave me a once a week email. It highlights one coach and it can be anything on the lot, not just a FT. I also read on the forum that many coaches never make the web site. I called MOT and after speaking to a sales rep I decided not to waste his time if I was just kicking the tires. So, using a savings calculator, I planned on seriously shopping this winter.
That didn't stop me from looking daily. Then, this June, on a Sunday night. there it was on craigslist and again on RVT. A 2000 U295 with everything I wanted and a few others I figured I could add later (solar panels). The CL ad stated it was listed two hours ago! I discussed this with my wife for days. I think I waited until Thursday to call. I knew I could afford the asking price but it left me scrambling to find the money I planned to save over the next few months.
This started June 26th and I should be picking it up in a little over a week.
Regards Ed

Appreciate the tips. Having heard all the usual cliches about salesmen ("How can you tell when they are lying? Their lips are moving?"), it is good to hear the salespeople, much like the brand itself, appear to be a cut above the norm.

It is sometimes frustrating, as I am mentally ready to buy. Financially, we are better off waiting a couple more years. As far as timing and luck, I'm not sure those have ever been my strong suits. :) I hope that changes a bit when the time to buy finally does come.

I should have mentioned, that the e-mail from Mel @ MOT were short, with the info that mattered to me, and some phone pictures. This is not to be confused with their website or the great job they do with their photos, and more detailed ads. All I was getting was some early notice, which would have allowed us to drop everything, and get there that week if needed.
Having to wait to buy, makes me crazy, but time, budget, and life all seem to be trying to teach me something about that. Good luck, knock on any Foretravel door you see, and gather the info so that you can spring onto the "right coach", not a coach right now.

I appreciate all of the tips and advice being offered here. To follow up on the suggestion to get on MOTs mailing list and what I presume might be a subsequent e-mail from someone at MOT, how much information do you give them, if any? Do you, for instance tell them what model year range you are interested in or budget or length, etc? Or do you simply ask to receive the weekly e-mails and wait to see if a coach comes along that you're interested in (looking elsewhere ar the same time, no doubt)?
Title: Re: Thinking about selling our FT....

Be ready to buy the right coach when it comes along. Look, ask questions, and kick tires until you are ready. When you are ready to buy, let MOT, FOT, and Foreforums know what you want. "What you want" might include length, a range of years, a price range, and any particular "deal makers" or "deal breakers."
I had looked at coaches at MOT starting in January 2010. I dealt mostly with Jason Haskins. We test drove a coach and looked at some others. None were right for us at the time. In March, Bill Jackson posted on Foreforums that Craigslist (Austin) had a FT listed. I called immediately. Turned out the coach was six miles from my home. We inspected it and called Jason to arrange a professional inspection. His response was, "Is that the one in Bellville?" He was looking at buying it for resale at MOT. He suggested that I buy it with no further inspection if I thought it was satisfactory. We financed the 13 year old coach at a credit union and completed the deal in less than a week.
I then owned a 1997 U295 and a 1997 Discovery. I took the Discovery to MOT the next week for a consignment sale. They had a potential buyer before I got there. I received a check in about 10 days for the Discovery.

Okay, one last (I think) question. Since we're probably still a couple of years away from buying, at what point would you suggest contacting these folks? Realistically, based on my wife's projections and comfort level, we're about two and a half years out from any purchase. If the right coach were to come along that were a sizable amount less than our budget, we might push it up six months or so.

We thought we were months away from purchase, the funds were there but not accessible at the time, and the SOB needed to be sold FIRST.
So we went to the local FT dealer just to look and see. Our plans suddenly changed when the beauty you see under my name to the left of this post appeared before us. The rest is history. We scrambled to get the funds together while negotiating price and details, and became a two RV family for a few months.

I think our plan is to have enough saved to buy the coach without having to worry about selling our fifth-wheel first. That has been the process we've followed in the past (bought our first fifth-wheel, then sold our tent trailer, and the same with the second fifth-wheel), and I suspect we'll follow that approach again.

I'd like to think so, but my wife is very practical - aside from marrying me, that is :D. When she puts a plan in place, she generally sticks to it unless there is compelling reason not to. Hopefully there is a coach out there that will compel her. :) I am hoping to get her to see at least a couple of FTs when their owners pass through this area. It isn't really in the cards at this time for us to travel hundreds of miles to see a coach if we aren't prepared to buy. Getting time off work, finding someone to watch the dog and who is qualified to stay with our autistic son makes planning essential.

Talked with a very nice guy at PPl who offered to buy it right out for next to nothing but did offer to sell it on there lot starting in the 25,000 dollar range then they would charge a 3,500 fee for the Service.. So this means if I went the PPl route it would likely bring us 21,500.
Like I said earlier this has been one awesome machine and never left us on the side of the road, It would for sure make someone a very nice coach if anyone is interested....I'm going to list it next week on CL in the Corpus Christi area for $24,500 And I just wanted to give the Forum 1st option
FYI We took a group of us this past weekend in the bus to see Miranda lambert concert and I noticed small Spider Cracks "DRY ROT" in the front pass side tire that I replaced new back in 2010....All other tires show no Cracking but due for new tires all around soon due to age
My name is Matthew and I can be reached by phone for any questions 361-244-0665..Thanks

Matthew,
I encourage you to post a classified on the forum - more visibility to the fact that it's for sale that way.

Al, that's exactly how that place that sells the Realm (can't remember their name right now) got started. Of course, buying them cheap is one thing - selling them for a profit is another.

Thanks to all for all the interest in our coach....It truly is a awesome thing to see so many interested in a 18 year old FT..... The first guy to come down just bought it after a 4 hour scope and drive and I think he is going to enjoy the coach the way I did for the past 5 years.....Again, Thanks for all the interest and Happy travels to all

For folks who continue to "think about it", I would point out that a new Honda CRV costs as much as the price of this FT. Any solid, running Foretravel for less than $30,000 is likely a great deal. Pickups are in the $50,000 range these days. I had to be a "2-Foretravel" owner for a couple months when I found mine. Hard to make it all happen at once, unless you are at a dealership that gets a $3500-$7000 cut.

Brad, couldn't agree more. I have just found this posting yesterday. After deciding that we will need to sell the house to get into a rig, we purchased a 2011 Buick Enclave last Saturday morning. My wife and I are just sick, we paid a few thousand more for the car than for this rig. :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X
I'm happy that someone found quite a deal, maybe when the house sells we will to. Don't delay if you don't need to is all that I'm saying.
