Title: Foretravel E33 Motor Designation
Post by: jbucking on September 05, 2014, 09:50:38 pm
I am considering purchasing a 2004 U320. The motor designation in the model number (last three digits) is E33. Can anyone please tell me what motor this coach has ? It would have a bearing on my purchase price. Thank you. I hope to be a Foretravel owner very soon.

Not sure what you are looking at but sounds like the transmission nr to me.  My transmission nr is E23/300MHR with 8.9 Cummings ISL 400 w/retarder.  Sorry I am no help as to engine codes.

I think that the E33 refers to a specific engine-transmission combination, but I do not have a decoder ring.

Look to the left of the drivers seat--- check the build plate located there.  Get the build number and call Foretravel, hey can give you all the details, no guess work!

By build number do you mean the vin number or the model number, or is there another number ? I didn't see any other plates to the left of the seat. The plate I took a photo of shows the tire sizes, tire pressures, coach weights, a build date, the vin and the model number. I saw on another thread on this site where a guy was explaining the model number numbers. I have decoded all the other number with success, but he refers to the last three numbers as the engine designation number. I will try giving Foretravel a call. Thank you. John

Build number is the 4-digit number contained within the model number

Quote
the "model number" under the VIN number on the ID plate showing
year - build number -  size - Floorplan - Model - Engine (Which Engine)
Example: F 03 6024 4023 AGDS U320T E31

03 = Year
6024 = Coach Build Unit #
4023 = Internal Designations
AGDS = Floorplan
U320T = Chassis
E31 = Internal Engine Designations

So for this 2004 coach, what are the 4 digits after the F04 (the first should be a "6" since in 2004 you'll be in the 6000's).  That will be the build number.

Give Foretravel the model number and they can probably tell you what mood the shop foreman was in the day they finished the coach!  :P

Oh, and Barry's site is an excellent resource for FT specs

Foretravel Specifications, Floor Plans, Photos & Brochures by Year (https://wiki.foreforums.com/doku.php?id=through_the_years:specs)

For 2004, according to the specs

U320 has 500 HP ISM02 with Allison 4000MH series 6 spd. transmission with retarder (4060R)
U270 and U295 have 400 hp ISL with Allison 3000MH series 6 spd. transmission with retarder (3060R)

It does have the Allison Transmission with the retarder. I believe it is 500HP Cummins, but will contact Foretravel to verify. Thanks for everyone's help.

Thank you. How is a 450hp Cummins changed to 500hp unit ? Were these engines "reprogrammable" for more HP ? Is a reliable motor ?
