Title: Lug Nut Covers
Post by: jor on September 25, 2014, 10:00:25 pm
Well, I finally lost a lug nut cover. I'm trying to ID it so I can order a few. They appear different than those I've seen discussed in a number of threads and over at Barry's. They are 2 1/4" tall with the standard 1 1/2" across the flat and are the slide on type. Check out the marking on top. Anyone have similar covers and a source? Thanks.

I've seen a lot of that type at truck stops.  The ones that have the internal threads (like my 2002) are the ones hard to find.  I think there are 2-3 sizes in use, but I think you could find them at your nearest Loves, Pilot, Flying J...

Look on ebay or google.  Can't remember where I got replacements but they were exact match.  DAN

I checked eBay and Amazon. It seems that the 2.25 inch height is not common. Most are 2. Haven't tried FT yet. I checked with a truck supply outfit today but they didn't have a match. I'll check a Pilot tomorrow. I think I'll stick with the slip on type for now. I had the plastic screw ons before but I found the threaded part would get brittle and break off. Thanks to all for the feedback.

I tried Pilot, Peterbuilt, Cat and a bunch of other places.  Finally found mine at Iowa80.com.  I do not remember the part # but there are two sizes.  I bought 4, 1 to use and 3 as spares.  $4/5 each.  Most truck stops have bins of the covers bun none had the design on the end.

Checked out all of the listed sites but I couldn't find a 2 1/4". I took Bill's advice and called Foretravel. Billy Jack has them for less than $4 apiece. I ordered 10. I'll post when I receive them. There is only the letter "p" inside the plastic nut and it is held on to the lug nut by a metal cage with a tang for each nut flat. Here's a photo.

I am sure that many (if not most) on this forum would figure that they can find better places to spend their money, but I got tired of breaking the plastic lug nuts. When I lost one of the big plastic axle covers, it was the final straw. I saw the T. Kane Enterprises "ultimate axle covers" on a coach at  FOT in Nacogdoches, and once I caculated that replacing all the lug nut covers with new ones and as well as all of the axle covers, I would eventually be spending around $400 for the self destructing plastic variety, I decided I would rather spend the bucks to get something that I actually liked. I am happy that I did... Feel it was better value for the money. I donated all the remaining plastic bits to Xtreme when we left there...
These are very nice quality polished stainless. Kind of a pain to install initially because you have to remove 3 lug nuts for each bracket that holds the covers on (obviously, doing one bracket at a time is best ::) ) After initial instal, it is a breeze to get on or off with just a bit of practice. Very quick and easy to check the oil level on the front now. Also, cleaning and polishing the wheels is much easier than before. I suppose potential theft might be an issue, but you could easily replace the ¼-20 flat head hex screws with pinned torx or some other security type fastener... Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it :D

I'm going to check there too just in case the FT ones aren't correct. I want to stay with the ones we have as this is the first one I've lost whereas my last rig with the screw ons would fly off from time to time. I do like the looks of your, Don.

Yea, that's it, Ralph! You know, I clicked that link earlier and saw the 1.5" and was thinking it was the height. Just put a caliper on mine and it is right on 2.25." I'm thinking mine are not genuine Alcoa parts because there is no part number on them, just a "p" where your part number is. Cost me an extra tenner but what the heck, now I've got the info for next time. Thanks.

FWIW I feel it's very important to tighten the plastic lug nut covers with the Alcoa tool.  If you tighten them just snug, they never loosen and rarely break.  I always remove the covers before I let techs work on a wheel.  They invariably over-torque the covers, breaking the threads.  Then the covers go flying off as you go down the road.
