Title: Refrigerator?
Post by: stump on September 27, 2014, 10:10:16 am
On my 91 U300  It is the side hallway model I think the refrigerator is going to need an upgrade it is kind of narly looking.I looked through the archives some but figgured I ask . The model is a Dometic RM4804 I went to their website and they show a RM2863 or a 3962 as a replacement. Is one better than the other or are there any other brands that are better?

Having just gone through the fridge replacement process, I can tell you the critical thing is to find one that fits in your available space.  Your situation will be a little tougher, because you don't have much extra room on either side to play with.  Whatever replacement unit you choose cannot be significantly wider than current unit.  You can go taller, if you don't mind losing storage space below.  Keep doing your research, and you will soon narrow down the list of available choices.  Good luck with the upgrade!

I replaced an RM4804 with the 3962.  It (as will any replacement) requires rebuilding the floor, as all replacements use a "flat floor" while the RM4804 was stair stepped to accommodate the ice maker compressor.  It also required cutting a minimal amount of one side.

It has a little more interior volume than the old one.

Thanks guy's I also found that the Norcold 1095 is also a cross for the RM4804 I'll do more research. Any other Brands?

Stump,

I replaced ours also with a Norcold. You will need to modify the enclosure as the Norcold requires a flat floor. Good time to clean up the wiring and make the enclosure fire resistive as it is a firetrap the way it comes from the factory. See my four photos at: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/100921130470085833749/albums/5794180000392973681 (https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/100921130470085833749/albums/5794180000392973681)  Check wood just inside the outside access door as it may have rot.

Stump, there are several threads about refrigerator replacement. We replaced our dead Dometic with a residential refrigerator. That isn't the solution for everyone, but is was for us.

Since your coach is a side isle with the fridge in the middle facing front, I believe your access panel is in the back and can be gotten to from the bathroom through a panel. The vent is underneath the coach and air comes up through the floor if I remember correctly. It looks like a similar floor plan to Bill C's coach and that is the way his is.

Stump,
Falls under: "You can lead horses to water, but you can't make them drink."
Atwood makes a nice RM4804 replacement (Exact same Width and Depth dimensions, 3" to spare, top or bottom, your choice) The Atwood design removes absorption refrigeration safety concerns, maintains the original "dry-camping design" and "coach value" advantages.  I would put in a shallow utility drawer under a replacement  Atwood and increase the value of the coach rather than moving to residential and limiting the coach's appeal.  YMMV See:

Our Atwood HE-0801 experience continues to be excellent, nine months running now.  See:

Absorption Refrigerator Options in a U270 (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=19944.msg154425#msg154425)

BTW, the early-on "oozing of the thermal transfer mastic" stopped at about the "two months of use" mark.  So, no negatives lingering or left to report.
