Title: A/C not working
Post by: Geoffh on October 26, 2014, 08:35:50 pm
Today I decided to run my generator to exercise it as I rarely have it on. I remember in previous threads that I should apply a load whilst it runs, I turned on the forward A/C for 15 mins, turned the A/C off and decided to run the bedroom A/C unit but it did not run. It was dead, I checked the breaker and the breaker is a double breaker (for both A/C units ) the breaker is fine. A couple of weekends ago we were in an RV park and I remember that there was a humming noise ( similar to the noise a transformer would make ) in the bedroom A/C unit even though the unit was switched off. We left the RV park an hour later and I forgot to check this out.
The A/C is a Coleman 7330 series, any ideas will be appreciated.
Cheers,
Geoffh

I am guessing you have a bad start capacitor.  Have you checked to make sure voltage is getting to the unit?

Thanks for the response
I will have to download the manual to find out what everything is and what I should be expect to get when using my meter.

Just bumping this up for my Bro' in case there are any more ideas. I have a different system so cannot help him much- we do not use our AC.

Might be simpler to just swap the capacitor(s) out, they're almost certainly weakened by age anyway.  You can buy em on Amazon for a few bucks, Graingers might be local.  Look at the caps carefully.  The ends should be absolutely flat, if either end is dome shaped that cap is definitely bad.  Healthy capacitors really help reduce starting current and heat on your compressor, a good thing.

Chuck, thanks for this advise. We keep the GV off site and we plan to go away in the RV for a few days around the 6th Nov. I will follow the advise and hopefully resolve the problem. Luckily our weather this time of the year does not need us to use A/C.
I have to google a maintenance manual for this unit.
Thanks again,
