Title: Wall sconce light fixtures going south
Post by: Fiddler on November 12, 2014, 04:21:23 pm
What is it with these wall mounted light fixtures....one by one they just quit working and the bulbs are fine; fuses are good.  So far, the one behind the drivers seat in the living room; and the two bracketing either side of the bed. What could be contributing to the problem and how do you test these things without taking them apart?

FWIW,
may be the push button switch.  I have noted that mine are sometimes reluctant to come on.  I have ordered some new push on push off switches for mine.  Haven't even gotten them yet to install, I believe my issues will be resolved with the new switches. Best of Travels.

The 12 Volt sconces by the bed have always been intermittent, I believe that it is due to the contacts in the base becoming deformed.  I have screwed with them several times and eventually they fail again. In addition the lead base contacts on the bulb also deform.  A new bulb will work for a while.

Last night I finally fixed (I hope) the same problem with the light over the dining table.  I bent the contacts out and cleaned the corrosion off them then gave the bulb base a shot of dielectric grease.  Warning.  If you do this this light is 120 V not 12 V.  Make sure it's off.

Problem finally isolated.  The push on push off switches were temperamentally flakey.  After driving all over town, including Home Depot, finally located similar replacements at Ace Hardware for $4.75 each.  Work like a charm. Thx to all who offered support.

Glad that solved your problem.  I did not wish to drive around searching.  This is why I haven't replaced mine yet.  Ordered them off ebay (and that sometimes takes a few days).  I had come to the conclusion that the switch was the bugger with mine.  Looking forward now to receiving the switches and replacing.
