Title: A/C Shroud. Gone with the Wind
Post by: Lance Camper on November 18, 2014, 12:49:37 pm
I found a small pool of water on the drivers side front window sill this morning. I thought the driving rain we had last night was the culprit until I noticed a drip coming from under the valance. I opened the cabinets over the window to find the carpet wet. I climbed up onto the roof to find my front A/C shroud gone. Now I'm dreading what I can not find.

I'm hoping this is the source of the leak. Does the A/C shroud act like a rain cover or is it just there to protect the inside of the A/C. Can water get inside the coach if the shroud is gone? Should I cover this with a tarp until I can get new shroud?

thanks
Ed

Ed, That shroud does keep water out of the coach, cover it if you can til you get a replacement. BTDT.

I had same issue , yes it let's water into coach , make sure it's switched off , I used a folded tarp and tight bungy straps around base .
Good luck

If I could just find a shower cap that would fit "Shrek" I think it would fine.  :giggle:

The weak points are the screw hole areas.  If you're handy, you might want to reinforce those areas on the new shroud.  Steve uses stuff from his R/C boating hobby.

Steve also checks ours twice a season.

Will do.  I just hope it was lost last night during high winds not into someone's windshield on my last trip.

Actually, just using fender washers around the screws helps a lot.

When my shroud took off, the only thing left was 1 screw, the other 3  went bye bye, so assume they were not installed correctly ?

I lost a shroud on my way to yuma a few weeks ago.  I replaced with
a shroud from icon.  they are made in canada and imho are better than
the dometic, which I believe are made in mexico. I too used fender
washers on all four screws.
I also had both windshields replaced this week in by "touch of glass"
in yuma.  they did the job on-site at our house in the foothills.  they do
excellent work.

Well after a 650 mile drive and sitting for the last four days, we heard a noise like something hit the camper. We went outside to investigate and I climbed up on the roof. The rear AC shroud had torn loose just like the front did. At least it was still on the roof. I had replaced the screws and used locktite. The cover broke at all four screws. The locktite held.  ^.^d

Any ideas for a temporary cover for the 650 mile trip home. I thinking a tarp and bungie cord won't hold.
Can I drive without a cover as long as it doesn't rain? ???

Regards
Ed

You shouldn't have a problem driving with a bare A/C so long as it doesn't rain.

We just replaced ours with the Canadian covers. I got new stainless screws and stainless fender washers so I'm glad to see Brett's endorsement of that.  Seems with more surface area the screws shouldn't tear lose as easily with the fender washers on there.

The covers were a perfect fit and seemed heavier than the originals.
