We would like to get rid of the Bose Acoustimass unit because when someone is sitting next to it it is very annoying as it can't be turned off. We would also like to regain the use of the full depth of that cabinet.
Can the Acoustimass unit be permanently unplugged without damaging the system?
The Bose system will not work without the accoustimass unit. The unit contains the amplifiers and distributes the sound to the base speaker (in the unit) and the four remote stereo speakers.
The Acoustimass unit supplies power to the rest of the system, so no, you cannot unplug it and have any other part of the Bose system work.
The Acoustamass under the kitchen sink on my coach has bass and treble adjustment knobs. Lowering the base output will greatly improve the comfort in your living room if yours is so equipped.
