Title: averted a disaster with the inverter
Post by: Miz Dani on December 04, 2014, 07:18:51 pm
What a day...Gary O to the rescue, got to the bottom of my recent electrical issues: started by tracing all the systems from main box to sub panel to transfer switch, to inverter.  Found an open neutral line, (?) pulled the heart interface box in the bay & found melted & burned wires, cut & spliced wires, took off burnt part, spliced together & put back together in the bay, systems all go!!!!  Took a few hours off & on but I now have electrial power all over the coach again, once again, Gary O saves my bacon!!!  ;D I did manage to download one picture of the damage to the files, not sure how to get it on this post.  (thanks to Sandy O for pics!)

.....oops guess I did get it on here....twice.... ::) ...mods please feel free to delete one....

You are certainly getting to know all the ins and outs of your coach.

Daqni, Looks like a real disaster was averted, too bad FT could not have fixed it when you were there.

Dani:

Really glad all that burned were a few wires- whew.

Hope all will be well now- you deserve it after this adventure.

Dani,

Did you learn the cause of the near-disaster? Was it internal to the inverter or external? Maybe the inverter's overload circuit failed? Glad you got it all fixed up with more damage.

I had something similar happen to my sticks and bricks.  Determined it was likely due to a lightning strike.  We found numerous loose neutrals after we had the washing machine circuit fail. Had to replace four wires in that instance.  The little three light wiring testers available at any hardware store are great for a quick check.

I think it was a short in the wiring, maybe 2 wires touched each other that shouldn't have (?) ...will have to ask Gary O....darn glad there wasn't a fire....getting at that thing was nothing short of impossible....the box weighs a ton and he's a pretty big guy, had to crawl up inside the bay and lay at all angles, stick his head in between two metal boxes with sharp edges, it was a real chore...not for the faint of heart!

Mz Dani -
So glad to hear that your Foretravel schooling is progressing.

Hands on is the best way to larn as there are so many variables with the systems on our coaches.  While you investigate issues is is most important to be able to "touch" and "see" the problem.  ;D

Ain't this fofum great?  ^.^d

Yeh Scott, have had about enough school housin' for awhile, (between the fuel pump, power steering, & this little adventure) I need a little break!  It is great though to see how stuff works, and I can always count on learning more than one lesson when anything goes wrong, 'cause one thing always leads to another. :-X And yes, thank goodness for the good people on this amazing forum!!!

Dani,
Glad Gary was able to fix it for you. He is a great friend to have. He has helped me as well many times. Hope to get down there to visit soon now that he is home again.

Mark

Mark & Tanya, yes, Gary O certainly is amazing....he has a micro chip in the back of his brain for everything FT!  Remember you all are how I met the dear boy, & his DW the "very good sport" Sandy....could not find better people than you all if I tried!  ^.^d

You two are overdue for another visit, so come on down!
