Title: Powertech Fuel Filter Upgrade
Post by: pocketchange on January 10, 2015, 09:04:48 pm
Racor has a fuel filter with the water separator (bowl) feature and I was curious if anyone has made the upgrade?  pc

I used to put the Racor 200 on all of the Mercedes diesels that we imported into the country.  I tried several other low micron brands but the fuel was so dirty here that they clogged in a few thousand miles. The bowl was clear and also had a couple of water probes that could be connected to an optional sensor. Make sure to carry several spare cartridges (about $15/ea). Since this will be the secondary filter, I would make sure it came with a 2 micron filter.  The lower the micron number the quicker they clog but the better they clean. The new models have a built in priming pump. The fuel is constantly being filtered when the main engine is running so one generator element should last a very long time unless algae is picked up and clogs the main engine filters.

Bosch style inline pumps are not that sensitive to small particles compared to common rail systems but will still see increased wear with larger particles. A good filter on the generator may keep the bypass/fuel return valve working to specs longer.

I've replaced my Isuzu generator fuel filter head on the pressure side with one that accepts the Cat 1R0750 2 micron filters, no bowl but the water separating was done prior to the fuel pump with the head that I added in this post.

Generator Modifications- Radiator and Primary Fuel Filtration (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=21373.msg158996#msg158996)

Had to fabricate a new bracket for holding the head since the Cat filter was so much larger than the original filter though.
