Title: Engine motor mounts hard?
Post by: Dennis Davis on January 19, 2015, 10:09:25 pm
I have a 350 hp cummins in my '99 270. At idle the coach vibrates quite a bit. If you bring it off idle a bit, of course the vibration goes away with the increased r.p.m. In gear or at curb idle it vibrates. Noisy! Now if this was a auto or truck with this symptom, I would say the motor mounts were the culprit. Maybe hard mounts. Has anyone changed the mounts for this problem and have it resolved? Looks like the engine would have to come up quite a bit to change the front mounts. Pulling the mount brackets look time consuming also.
Thanks for your input.
Dennis

First thing I would do is the physically check the mounts, including transmission mounts.

The check engine RPM with a good strobe tach.

Thanks for the reply. As far as appearance, the mounts look great. That's why I mentioned "hard" mounts. I do have a old strobe type device sold years ago by Snap On for checking Diesel RPM which I could do. I will make a note of my RPM on the tach and record it. I would have to do some research to see how to change the RPM. So you don't think this vibration is "normal"?

I've also noticed that my engine mounts seem to be transmitting more vibration over the last couple of years.  I'll be taking one of them off to get a part number in the next couple of days and I'll get back to you.
