Title: Minimum Engine Oil Temp
Post by: Old Hippie on February 13, 2015, 07:03:22 pm
What is the recommended minimum oil temp for my M11? I want to set a mimimum red line on my VMSpc to make sure I don't try to drive off too soon before the engine is ready. I've been using around 110 degrees most times which requires what seems like a long time to get there.

I only drive my M11 when water temp is over 120, but not run hard until above 160, normal runs about 178-185
Oil temp runs about 20-30 over water  temp

A diesel is extremely slow to warm up unless you have a load on it. If you just start it and let it fast idle for a minute or two and then go on your way (but take it very easy on throttle and RPM) it will warm up much faster.

Agreed.  And that is what Cat, Cummins, DD, etc recommend.  Wait for air pressure to build and, then it is suggested that you are ready to use light throttle-- driving out of CG, city streets, etc.

Sure, if parked at a freeway entrance, go to high idle to do some additional warm up.

I know the Allison manual specifies a minimum oil operating temp but I don't see any info on that specific question in the M11 manual. It just indicates that you should have oil pressure within 15 seconds and should idle three to five minutes before operating with a load.

Put me in the 5 min line before moving out.

The other side is, how long before shutting down.
I monitor my water temp and once it reaches normal, add 5 min's before shutting down (unless it's a hot day).  pc
