Hi all,
Heading to FOT this weekend to get some work done on the coach. It's my first trip there and I'm trying to find the easiest route.
I'm arriving on I 10 from Louisiana. Google maps is suggesting small country roads traveling northwest once I get to Lake Charles. I suspect this is the shortest route but not the easiest in the coach. Any recommendations will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kearn
I truck out that way some and from Lake Charles I'd go I 10 to Beaumont, TX and take 69 north takes you right into town.Good road. But I'm sure the Texas folks can probably recommend a better route
I live in the area and I've taken all the routes. I'd stay on I-10 through Orange, then take the 873 exit to Highway 62/Mauriceville. Stay on 62 North for the next 24 miles through Mauriceville to Buna. At Buna, you'll hit 96 North, so you'll have 4 good lanes for the next 80 miles through Kirbyville and Jasper to San Augustine. There at San Augustine you'll hit Highway 21 West to Nacogdoches.
They are all good roads, easy to drive, easy on the coach, and the scenery is nice. My next choice would be the route Stump suggested. It is a good route too, except for the construction on the loop in Lufkin. The exit to Highway 59 in Lufkin could have been better, but it's not too bad.

I'm glad to see this because I am leaving for Xtreme in three weeks, for my front boo boo remediation. hope I will be able to sleep in coach during the work, as others have done :sleepy:
Is 69 the road that has the railroad overpass that is about 12'3" as I recall? I vaguely remember going under a RR overpass on the way to Beaumont or Lufkin.
Does not matter which route you take ( as long as you stop by your bank 1st ! ) ^.^d
Yes 69 has low railroad overpass just North of Lufkin. DAN
Sure wouldn't want to take one of the newer Foretravel coaches under that overpass!
If you are taking your time, or doing some sight-seeing on the way, we can recommend a nice COE campground that is not far off your route. It is called Hanks Creek (link below). Located right on the lake, set back in some beautiful pine trees, and (at least when we were there) very quiet and peaceful. Mostly "back-in" sites, but a few "pull-thrus" (with 50A). The roads in and out are easy with a 40' coach. Photos below from our stay at Site 01, which is close to the main entrance.

I live in Baton Rouge. My route has always been I-10 to I-49 north. Then take Hwy 84 West at Mansfield, LA to Hwy 59 south into Nac. Easy ride all the way.
The railroad bridge north of Lufkin in now redone. You now go over the railroad and not under. It was never an issue for an RV including the IH. I test drove a IH right under that old bridge with no problem. 69 has no bridges now to worry about the entire length. Just a wonderful road!
Bob
Thanks for all the advice.
