Title: Source for dash air compressor?
Post by: Jim McNeece on March 08, 2015, 12:04:38 pm
The clutch coil on my dash air compressor has shorted out.  I could get it repaired, but that would cost at least $200 - $300.  So was wondering if anyone knows of a reliable source for a new compressor.  The cheapest online ones are on eBay for $225, but am not sure if these are just cheap Chinese ripoffs.

The existing compressor is a Seltec TM-16HD model 488-46018.

Thanks

TRUCK AC COMPRESSOR (http://www.buspartsexperts.com/TRUCK-AC-COMPRESSOR_c_45.html)

Here's where I got mine.  When I called  they were able to tell me exactly which one I needed for the replacement.

I thought that clutch can be pulled from shaft and a new clutch installed.  No need to purge & recharge refrigerant with just a clutch swap.

Replacing clutch is an involved affair according to the Seltec maintenance manual.  You MUST remove the compressor so that the new clutch can be pressed onto the drive shaft

John Hughes pulled my clutch off and installed my new one on a Motorcade without removing compressor. I saw no reason it would have to be pulled off. I will have to check if we have the same one as you.

Yes, please let me know.  I really don't want to do any more work than necessary.

Here is the Seltec manual I referenced.:

It is the same. I forgot I also had the clutch replaced 9/15 at the same time I was having the Expansion Valve replaced. Compressor was not removed.

I usually just replace the entire compressor instead of replacing the clutch. One reason is the seals around the shaft eventually seem to go after a while.

That's my bias too.  If it's time for the clutch to go, the rest of the compressor isn't far behind.
