Title: Locating a Fire Safe
Post by: toyman on March 25, 2015, 11:37:55 am
Where would you locate a fire safe ? We travel long time and carry important (to us) papers & "stuff" and would like to protect them as much as practical by carrying them in a fire safe. I realize the level of protection provided (or not), but it will be better than a manila envelope. Just don't know the best place to put it. Thinking of the electronics bay as I have it now protected with Halon.

When my RV burnt to a crisp, everything below floor level was just fine.  I'm no fireman, but all the burnt out RV's I've seen seem to end up in that condition.  Obviously, you have more security from break-in's in the living area than in the basement, so that's another consideration.

The (only) PO of my barth had a fire resistant safe put in under the dinette.  My FT came with one, factory installed, anchored inside one of the bedside cabinets.  My objection to it is the COMPLEX combination.  So, I do not lock my Glock in it.  don't think I could do the combination in haste.  At home, my (smaller of two) safe is also anchored into a floor level cabinet.
As Rich says, if you put it at floor level, or recess it into the floor, it would be subjected to much less heat than if it were higher.  Anyway, you don't want anything heavy like that to raise your center of gravity.

Yes, the lower the better.  Bolt it down also so the thieves can't remove it.

Thanks for the thoughts. Guess my first choice is probably best. Not especially concerned with security as the most valuable things in it will be pass ports, vehicle insurance, medical directives and "stuff".

Rich, went back and re-read your experience. My supression system SHOULD be delivered today. Also adding a simple fire annunciation to the engine bay and generator area. May add one for the refer also.
