Title: question on 89 Foretravels
Post by: Dan Noble on April 29, 2015, 10:37:37 am
Hi,

I've been following Marks post on his 89 U300 Detroit and have some questions on the differences between my 89 U280- mostly from curiousity

My 89 U280 is a Cat and is mechanical fuel pump versus the Detroit which is electronic.  Is that just a difference between engines options that one is mechanical and one electronic? or are there mechanical Detroits also?  Cummins all electronic in Foretravels?

My 89 U280 transmission is also mechanical shift 4 spd Allison, no retarder with a lever on left side versus the keypad on Marks 89 which some mentioned has the retarder.  Was the upgraded transmission on all U300's or was that an option at purchase?

Thanks!

All Detroit 2 cycles fitted to Foretravels are DDEC II aka Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls II. They have a mechanical (lift) fuel pump. Injector/pump is located at each cylinder and electronicly actuated. Earlier models have MTB 648 Allison w/wo retarder and have a 3rd/4th lockup. Later have a Jake with upper 2nd gear/3rd/4th lockup, HT 746 Allison and touch pad selector. Earlier models have a rear radiator and 300 hp with the later models 350 hp/side radiator (vertical or horizontal radiator with one or two fans). HT 746 Allison is used in garbage trucks and buses. Very tough transmission and will easily take the 350 hp. Upgrading the 300 hp exceeds the OEM Allison for torque and hp in the rear radiator models with the MTB 648. ECU programming is the only difference between the 300 hp and the 350 hp.

Mechanical 6V-92TA were made but not installed in Foretravels.
