Title: New to us 1993 U-240
Post by: MRpotter on June 07, 2015, 10:55:28 am
Hi all, well iv'e been lurking for quite some time now and figured it was about time I introduce myself. My name is Brian and my wife's name is Kim. This past January we purchased a 1993 U-240 here is Colorado and have been preparing it for our first road trip. We will be leaving the end of this month from southern Colorado heading to Syracuse NY. We will be taking about 3.5 weeks for the trip, 1 week out, 10 days in upstate NY and about another week home. The trip out will be I-40 and returning on I-80 sometime in late July. The coach has had a complete tune up including the rack at Wagner Cat in Aurora CO, I just changed the trans. filter and fluid. New steer tires and many other minor things including getting all the on-board systems checked out. I am now in the middle of setting the ride height by removing some shims from the rear and will be purchasing some new shocks and possibly a steering stabilizer, not sure yet on this one. I have a few questions on the shim removal and will post in the tech. I also had to rebuild one of the windshield wiper motors as it was not parking when turned off, if anyone has any questions on this I will be happy to help. Anyhow, I just wanted to say hi to all and thank you for all the fantastic technical help and advise I have found on this site..

All the best, Brian

Welcome to the family Brian & Kim.  Looks like you have made a good start with your new coach.  Don't hesitate to ask if there is anything you need to know.  Everyone was new here once.  I take it you have seen Barry's excellent site?

Welcome MRpotter.  I have a 1992 U225 Grandvilla and am camping in Colorado Springs for a few more days.  Are you by any chance in the springs?

Welcome to the Forum!

We also own a 93 U240 and live near Castle Rock.  I think between us we may have doubled the membership here.  I just purchased the Foretravel in Dec 2014 and drove it home from Michigan during the winter storms.  Spent one night cold camping in a Walmart parking lot because I didn't know that ALL the RV parks up there close during the winter.  It got down to 17 degrees that night, and I hadn't figured out how to use the furnaces on internal power.  Wouldn't recommend that approach again...    :)

We took our coach up to Idaho in March/April for about 6 weeks.  I hope you will enjoy the fun and learning on your trip.  The more we used it, the more we liked it.  I've known other Foretravel owners for many years and they've always been almost fanatical about their coaches.  This is my fifth RV, and by far the best I've seen.

Here's a good tip that our previous owners passed on:  Be sure to get a good surge protector for your shore power.  You can buy them on Amazon and plenty of other places for about $150.  The previous owners didn't have one, and got nailed by a lightning strike near a Texas RV Park they were plugged into.  A couple tens of thousands of dollars later, they got everything working again; but they and now we, are true believers in staying protected.  You just never know when you'll plug in and get fried.  I do believe lightning strikes happen almost everywhere.

Another tip:  Use a pressure regulator on your park water supply.  We just recovered from a major water event after we connected in to a water connection in an Idaho RV park and discovered our old one had corroded and wasn't working.  The pressure gauge needle was jammed at the upper stop (100 lbs) and we had lots of geysers inside the coach.  Personally, I've found it best to fill up the internal water tank and then shut off the city water connection.  Your choice, but nobody likes having leaks.

With those cautions, I'd wish you a safe and enjoyable trip.  You've bought one of the best coaches available in that vintage.  Enjoy your trip, and perhaps we can compare notes when you get back home here to Colorful Colorado.

Regards,

John

John,

Have you checked RIDE HEIGHT.  That is the #1 thing to check on the Torsilastic suspension.

Hi Brian & Kim,

Welcome to the ranks of FT owners here on Foreforums. We got our coach just two weeks ago, after working on the deal for over a year. They are a great group on here, lots of invaluable help from searching, or asking if you can't find the answer to your question.

Enjoy!

Jack
