We towed my Wife's Honda Accord but it being 13 years old she decided that she needed a newer car so we found a 2013 Ford Edge with only 5000 miles. The manual says to start, run for 5 min, run thru gears, neutral and then turn it off and then to Acc. Why turn it to Accessory? Some people disconnect the battery to keep from running down their battery so what's the difference. Nothing needs to be on and the steering lock isn't an issue. Am I missing something here? I don't see why has to be in the Acc. position
I know I can put a disconnect on the battery or run a charge line but why bother if it can just run in OFF. Is this just a hold over from when it had to be in Acc to disengage the steering lock and they are just stuck on status quo? Some times I think the people writing manuals don't live in the real world anyway.

Don't know about the ford but my old jeep was that way the new one dies not have a steering wheel lock so no need for acc position other then to put it in neutral to tow and then back off and in park.

We have a 2013 Ford Edge AWD that we tow. Our Edge is NOT keyless. Prior to towing it, I did some research with several people stating the battery would run down after 4-6 hours. Others said the battery would be fine. Just in case, I had MOT install a charge wire during the Blue Ox baseplate and wiring installation.
Using Ford's procedure in the user's manual, the key cannot be removed. I found the following product, to allow the key to be removed: Roadmaster Fusemaster (http://roadmasterinc.com/products/accessories/electrical/fusemaster.html). I installed it on fuse #28 (15amp) Ignition Switch. Once flipped, it allows the key to be removed. Whether I need this or not, I'm unsure. I just like being able to remove the key. When I'm ready to tow, I turn on the car, put it in Neutral, release the parking brake, turn off: the climate control system, radio and automatic lights. Turn off the key (I get the warning about putting the trans. in Park), then flip the switch and remove the key and lock the doors. I have pulled the Edge over 5,500 miles without any problems. I'm guessing if there is any battery drain, it's being handled by the charge wire.
