Title: Radio in bedroom cabinet removal
Post by: Ronb on June 15, 2015, 11:22:52 pm
I would like to upgrade the Sony radio that is factory installed in the cabinet next to the bed. My question to the experts is how do you remove the radio without ruining the cabinet. There are no screws anywhere in sight above or below the radio in the shelves. The face of the radio is the removable type, but the only screws I see are small ones that are part of the radio. Any help would be appreciated.

If it is like our GV, the "floor" of the cabinet directly above the radio is removable.  It might be wedged in there pretty tight, but it should come out.  Once removed, you will have access to the back of the radio, wiring harness, and the antenna connection.

After you have disconnected the antenna and the wiring harness, you should be able to slide the radio chassis out of the mount.  Sometimes there are little levers/tabs on each side of the chassis that must be released in order to remove the radio.

Good luck with your upgrade!

This is called a "DIN 1" mounting system.  There are two "tools" required to remove the radio from the standard mount.  They are small flat bars that slide into slots behind the removable face on each side.  When inserted, they release the latches that hold the radio in the mount.  Insert the levers, and slide the radio out, then you can remove the mount easily.  If you don't have the "tools" any audio shop should have them.  Purchase an upgraded "DIN 1" size radio and it will fit in the same hole--- standardized design.

When you purchase the new radio it comes with the tools.  All you do is slide them in then the radio will pull out.

Around a year or two ago n the newer Sony radios they have changed the frame and the connector in the back of the radio.  Once you have removed the old radio you can pull the old bracket out by bending the tabs back. Cut off the old connector and then install the new connector.  Install new frame, plug radio in, slide radio in hole and then install the  front trim ring.

Before you go and do all of this, check your new radio with the old connector.  If it plugs in, it should work and you would not need to change out the bracket or wire connector.
