Title: New Engine Compartment Insulation
Post by: Green99 on June 28, 2015, 05:57:58 pm
I just recently completed engine compartment insulation replacement. I chose 2 inch 2 lb. as opposed to 1 inch 2 lb.  I am trying to post before and after pics but have never done this from my phone.  If it doesn't work I will post pics later.

Good Job!  Sure does brighten it up under there!  Seems a shame to get it dirty by driving it...

I ordered the insulation in silver but was shipped white.  I am really glad for the mistake.  It really brightens it up.  I am anxious to make a test ride and see the improvement.

Jerry,

It looks like your original was the standard quilted thin-canvasy material, which is what I have.

My original has held up better than yours. I had thought of adding some silvery material on top of it, but your all white sure does look good!

Thanks for sharing,

Trent

Trent,
Mine didn't have the quilted material.  I am not sure what years got that type.  It almost looks like a thermal blanket, but you are right, mine was in poor condition.

Great job Jerry, where did you order the material from?

Richard,
I purchased the material from CBM.  Cyber Bridge Marine.
Let me know if you would like their number.

O.K.  Sorry for the delay.  I am posting for info. for those interested.  Here is a link to the website:

Best marine soundproofing engine room compartment insulation for boats -... (http://www.cyber-bridge-marine.com/Engine-Room-Vinyl-Foam-Soundproofing.html)

This is probably going to be a little wordy but here goes.
I originally ordered 1" insulation with silver faced, but was shipped 2" with a white face.  I contacted John and he offered to send me return labels, but I decided to go ahead and use the 2" white and am very pleased with the results.  John was great to work with, willing to do whatever to make me happy.  While I purchased their retainers I opted not to use them, rather decided to use screws and large OD washers, as it was much easier.  I will use their retainers in the Gen. compartment, as I like the idea of gluing them on rather than running screws through the box.
Each roll is 27 sq. ft. at a cost of 268.01 per roll plus shipping.  (This price is for 1" as opposed to 2")  I believe 2" is about $35.00 more per roll.  In my opinion worth the difference.  This price did included the PSA adhesive on the bottom side.
NOTE:  2" will not work in Gen. box in my opinion.  Not enough clearance.
For my Engine compartment it took 2 rolls, and that did everything including the 3 small areas at the very back.  With very little waste.  ( you have to lay it out before you cut it, but 2 rolls will get it done).
I covered the engine with a plastic dropcloth and removed the old.  (dirty job- mine was really coming apart).  Then I sanded any remaining foam off and stated install,  doing the bottom side of bed, then the back wall and the sides last.  I taped all the edges and then used the screws.
If you decide to use the 2" I would recommend using the 3" tape which I did not include the price but believe it was 33.00 per roll.  It will wrap around the 2" giving you about a 1/2" overlap on both sides.
Hopefully someone will find this useful.  If anyone has any other questions let me know.
