Title: My speedometer quit working
Post by: Glockjock on July 03, 2015, 07:22:44 am
I drove my 1997 U-320 to Livingston yesterday to take the driving test for my Class B license.  (By the way, piece of cake.  I am now legal to drive my coach.)  Anyway, everything was fine on the way over to Livingston.  During the qualification drive I noticed that the speedometer had quit working.  It was showing nothing the first couple of times I looked at it while trying to make sure I wasn't speeding during the driving test.  However, it did decide to start working again after a couple of minutes, and started registering my speed.

On the way home it wasn't working again.  I also noticed the odometer wasn't changing either.  Surprisingly, the cruise control worked just fine.  I found a comfortable speed, set the cruise, and relaxed.  I guess the cruise doesn't rely on the analogue speedometer for it's input signal.  Now, sometime during the ride home the speedometer must have worked intermittently, for I noticed that the odometer did register about 6 miles during the 45 mile drive home.

Any idea where to look first?

Thanks,
Glen

Take it to a truck shop.

It might be the gauge is bad. My coach is on the third speedo. If you wanted to have it checked you could send it to Lauderdale Speedometer and Compass (http://www.lspeedo.com/) so they can check it out for you. If it checks good then maybe a sensor somewhere on the drivetrain.

The speedometer hasn't worked since we got the coach. Most of the time it sits at 0, but once in a while it jumps up to 80. Sure seems strange to see 80 mph while stopped at a red light. I just drive by the tach - 1500 in 4th = 55 mph and 1600 = 60. The GPS program on Jo Ann's phone tracks speed and speed limit, so if it beeps I know I'm a bit over.

I was kinda thinking the same thing.  I thought that if somebody says this is a common and easily repaired problem caused a loose connection on the whatchamacallit I would get it fixed.  However, if it costs much money I don't really need a speedometer as long as the cruise control works.

Thanks guys.

I changed out my speedometer after having the same symptoms as you.  You will loose your odometer numbers  The speedo was purchased from Summit. Not a difficult job.
