Title: Squeaky entrance door.
Post by: sk320 on July 14, 2015, 01:54:01 am
Made our first real trip with our motorhome this last weekend.  All went well no problems, great power love the Allison retarder.

One issue, the entrance door constantly squeaks. It's seems that the door could be a little tighter.  Plate on the door jams looks like it's riveted on.  Has anyone else been through this, can it be adjusted or is there another fix.

And yes it was driving me nuts.

While on the road, we had the same constant squeak and cured it temporarily with WD-40.  As with every other question I've had and so not one bit surprising, a quick search produced the answer.

PTL entry door strike pin lube - who knew (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=9462.msg41990#msg41990)

Kudos to everyone who make this forum what it is; especially Michelle and Steve.  Thank you.

I find a shot of white grease lasts the longest.

I can relate to the "Driving me nuts" statement. After years of numerous attempts at solving the squeak  :headwall: I asked Faith to close the deadbolt and click the door open. NO MORE SQUEEK.  b^.^d

Short trip? >:D  >:D  Did you try dry silicone spray? Or wiping the entire contact area around the door and the coach? Possibly adjusting the closing latch so less clearance?

Short trip 200 miles each way over the mountains of southern British Columbia, enough time for the squeak to get on my nerves.

Tried the silicone spray around both side of screen door, no help.
DW pushed on the door, no help, pulled in and squeak stopped.
Problem now is DW doesn't want to sit there pulling on the door for four hours.

Going out of the coach and pushing on the door it could be an 1/8 inch tighter.
Is the door latch adjustable?

Steve,
Try the same thing we did. I tried adjusting the latch both ways with no success. Same with lubrication. Just completed a cross country trip with zero door squeeks.

I had the same problem.  Dry silicon on the pin and white lithium in the door latch.  No more squeak.

Steve, John here in Kaleden.
Take a 5/8 socket and loosen slightly the centre bolt and you will be able to reposition that striker bolt to get it tight. I have ours as in picture but yours may need to be slightly different.
I find the left outside edge of the big thin washer should be lined up with the left side of the long rectangular plate.
Tighten up the bolt before you test.

Try silicon on the rubber stops that the entry step contacts when closed...........that was our door squeek.

When we first got our coach we had a door squeak. After trying different remedies I noticed "witness" marks in the paint on the door casing where the latch bolt had originally been positioned. I loosened the bolt and moved it back over the witness marks and the squeak went away! ^.^d

I have had a squeaky door hinge for a long time.  I would spray some silicone lube on it and it wouldn't squeak for a day, then squeak again.  About a week ago I sprayed it with WD-40 and it hasn't squeaked since.  I did get too much WD-40 outside the hinge which picked up dirt.  That came off though with mineral spirits and a paper towel.

A few years ago the hinge was worn so that the door was lower than original.  The decal strip didn't line up with the strip on the body. I found some stainless washers of the right size to fit the hinge pin and the hinge and the right thickness to lift the door back up.  Nylon washers might work too if you can find the right size.  I had to remove all the screws that hold the hinge to the door frame and remove the door to pull the hinge pin out and work on it.  You don't need a washer at every joint on the piano leaf hinge, just the spots that are worn, every other one.  Unless it's a precision washer, the thickness of each washer needs to be checked as thickness will vary in a box of washers.

The other choice is to buy a new hinge from Foretravel.
