Title: Strong tobacco smell in the 270 I'm looking at. Any fix for that?
Post by: goldbehen on July 24, 2015, 07:58:51 pm
Looking at the 99 270 . Nice interior but strong tobacco Oder. My wife an smell a cigarette 100 yards away. I'm guessing I'll have to pass on this unless there's a good fix. Also needs new wind shields.

If you take vanilla extract pour it on a rag and place it inside it will help get rid of smoke and mildew. Also a open box of  baking soda will also help. You can also spray febreeze it will also help.

An ozone machine will fit it, but will harm rubber, etc.

At the sellers expense, either a professional company could come in a deodorize the carpet and headliner or the seller could could do it. Homes that have had fires, cats, dead bodies, etc. have their insurance company contact Service Master or like service.

The headliner in the later models is a carpet type material and will really retain foul odors.

Agree with your wife. 100 yards is too close.

Had the same problem with a GV we bought, cleaned interior wood with Murphy's Oil Soap, had carpet cleaned and sprayed with Bubble Gum, worked no smell.

So not nessesarily a deal breaker? I'd heard ozone machines worked but didn't know about the rubber.

If you are like us, you will want to make sure the odor is absolutely gone before you plunk any cash down. Get them to do it, not you.

I have lived with a MILITANT anti-smoker for 43 years (bless her heart).  I learned (the hard way) early on how to shop for any type of vehicle - but find it is especially applicable to the "pre-owned" category.  We approach the conveyance under consideration, my DW opens the door and takes a whiff of the air inside - if she detects even the slightest trace of "smoker's residue", we shut the door and walk away.  To do ANYTHING else is pure folly on my part.  I suggest, for your own peace of mind and well-being, that you move on to more suitable candidates.

The 95 U280 we have listed in the classifieds has never been smoked in . Aside from aging decals is in excellent condition. We'll make a heck of a deal for you and your wife.

I say use the ononator (or two).  The ionized air will go where the smoke went.  Surface cleaning products, such as Murphy's, WILL NOT.  We had good results from them using them to remediate homeowners smoke and odor claims.
Masking agents are offensive, temporary  or both.  The concentration of ozone required, for the length of time required, should not ruin any rubber or foam.  After all, the FT has mostly natural interior materials.  There is not a great deal to break down due to the ionizer.  Contact a place like ServiceMaster or Servpro.  They are (supposed to be) highly trained professionals with high performance equipment on hand.  Accordingly, they will probably rent you the (otherwise expensive) equipment to do the job.

I've got a nose like a bloodhound, (they called me "Snoopy Sniffer" at my former employer) & that wouldn't necessarily kill the deal for me but I absolutely agree that the current owner needs to deal with that before you plunk ~any~ cash down on it.

Thanks everyone. I'll have that conversation that he needs to fix the problem before I or most likely anyone else buys it. I'll also call service pro and see what they can tell me. Wouldn't rule out any foretravel as long as it has the airbag suspension and is well maintained. I may be in touch with some other sellers.

I once owned a 99 Acura that had been owned by a smoker.  Only reason I bought it was the ridiculous low price.  I never did get rid of the smoke smell. I figured that with a leather interior that I could clean it out, WRONG. I am one of those reformed smokers that cant keep their mouth shut with advice to smokers.

I would guess DW will always smell smoke in that coach no matter what you or seller does .

Too true.  It seems like you can get the first 90% of the stink out of a house, the next 5% with great difficulty, the final bit never.  When I told my wife she was imagining the smoke smell after washing walls, ceilings and floors, several coats of Kilz, paint, she informed me that all smells are imaginary when you think of how the olfactory sense works.  No winning that contest.
