Title: Camping East of HWH
Post by: Tim Fiedler on July 31, 2015, 07:14:36 pm
Going to be at HWH at 10:00 AM on Aug 10th.  Looking for a campground recommendation for Aug 9 within a couple of hours East of HWH.  Could have sworn I saw something re a waterfront COE campground, but all my search arguments on FOFUM did not turn the post up.

Any recommendations?

Fisherman's Corner COE.  Illinois side of the river, a mile or so south of I80. 50 amp, water in each loop, not at every site, dump station.  Another county park just south.  We stayed there. Nice.  John Deere Pavillion (Museum) in Moline.  Lock and Dam 15 has a nice visitors center.  Rock Island Arsenal has a great museum.

Kum and Go at the HWH exit is a good fuel stop.  Prices have always been pretty good.  Truck stop easy.

Tipton Family Diner 9 miles north is a great farmer friendly diner.  Good food, big portions for me, fair prices.

If you get to HWH during the week the day before, they sometimes have time to get you in early.  If not, they have 50 amp hookups.

Looks like a Monday appointment so Sunday night arrival makes HWH unavailable.

I stayed at the Kum & Go small truck stop right at the HWH exit on I-80 when I had my Monday appointment in June.

Thanks!  Will do Fishers Corner IL or Shady Creek IA - both fairly close but what I had in mind - a spot on the Missisippi for the night

Hi Brad,

They also let people stay at their old facility - south, across the highway from their main location. It currently is still used for manufacturing so park out of the way of the old building. The ground is sloped there so it isn't ideal but it is free.

During week days you can pull in and park overnight in the lot in front of the repair building by entering  another entrance about a 1/4 mile further south. I was told they leave that gate unlocked so customers can arrive early - though it is routinely locked on the weekends.
