Title: Route Question: Deadwood to Cheyenne
Post by: Don Rickey on August 04, 2015, 08:21:16 pm
Hi folks,

We're going to be running down to Colorado Springs from Deadwood, with a stop in Cheyenne. As an alternative to the interstates, has anyone taken route 85 from Deadwood to Cheyenne. Random checks on Google Earth seem to show a well-maintained two-lane with ample width for the 40-footer. After Cheyenne, we'll switch back to I-25.

Anyone done this route lately?

Don

We have driven most of that route a few times, most recently in June.  It is a very good road with little traffic with plenty of width for a 40-footer.  It is our favorite route between Cheyenne and the Black Hills area.  There was some construction near Cheyenne in June but not a big deal.

Excessive rains have washed out a bridge or two, but over all it is a good road. You can also go to Gillette and take 59 south. I just came up that to Sturgis and it is fine.

Hmmm. Sounds like that might not be the way to go, with the bridges being washed out. I'll check on the status when we get out there in a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone!

Don,  On my earlier post I forgot about an overpass construction in Lusk.  As you approach Wyoming 270 from the north there are detour signs for trucks but it does not apply to motor homes.  In Lusk the bridge over highway 20 is being rebuilt and all traffic takes a short detour.  A 40-foot coach followed us thru there and neither of us had any problems.
Here is a link to the WY DOT site that shows the construction sites.

Don, Not much you can do to avoid Denver and its traffic but be aware that the perimeter toll roads are EXPENSIVE. Might be as well off to pass thru denver in off peak times ( whatever that is ) than pay the toll road prices.
I recently drove US 85 from Denver to Near CO Springs, usual traffic in the populated areas but overall a good road, lots more scenic that I25 which is as bad as any interstate anywhere.
In the Springs don't miss OLD COLORADO CITY, shopping, restaurants and usual tourist traps but interesting.
