Title: Javelin CRT went black...
Post by: paul r on August 09, 2015, 02:34:23 pm
Hi everyone,
Pixie and I were on our way from Ft Myers to Michigan when the CRT screen for the Javelin back-up screen began to go on the fritz. When I turn it on and off you can see a slight change in the screen but for all intent and purpose the screen is black. There is no telling what our readings for the grey and black levels are and the camera is not showing anything.
When I turn the light adj. knob up I hear a slight hum from the unit.
Anybody have any trouble shooting techniques I can try to determine repair or replacement ?
We are driving a 98 U-270 and the numbers I found on the back of the frame that holds the CRT screen are: 03-2162 FT  s/n 1722.

Paul,
Could be the power supply.
Lori at Javelina can send the instructions to check the power supply.
Also sent you a PM.

You should be able to get a bnc to rca adapter from any radio shack and hook it up to any external after market monitor such as .. Amazon.com : Leegoal 7" TFT LCD Color 2 Video Input Car RearView Headrest... (http://www.amazon.com/RearView-Headrest-Monitor-Support-Rotating/dp/B007SLDF7O)

Paul, you might check with Gary Omel, I think that I gave him one or 2 that I had, he is back in Florida now, of course won't help you on the trip. We are near Boston and plan to go there tomorrow

You would need to verify that any monitor you get has the ability to show reverse image.  Depending on year, the Javalina did reverse image at the camera OR at the monitor.  I do not know which your is.

What i have does that and does dual view, one for cam and one for gauges ... you toggle between ... not at the same time ... another words does not do split view.

Can anyone supply a link to a bnc to rca adaptor?  I'm not sure what that is and I'm getting ready to change out my camera and monitor.

Thanks,

Rich

Hi Rich,

It is a small adapter to allow you to connect a BNC connector to a RCA jack on the Javilina connector. Radio Shack, if they are still in business near you, should have one. I'd call them first to save time. Depending upon your skills with soldering, another alternative is to cut off the wrong plug (BNC) on the new wire and solder on the right plug (RCA) for your needs. Probably clear as mud, huh. If you have friend who is an amateur radio operator - he probably can help you with either solution.

@ Rich ... yes this is what I have Amazon.com : Dragonpad 7" TFT LCD Color 2 Video Input Car RearView Headrest... (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007SLDF7O?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01)

I am flying out of town tomorrow morning for work but if you all need it I can take pictures this coming weekend for BNC to RCA adapters and the way I set up my 7 inch TFT monitor in the place of the old B&W CRT monitor.  Jim (jcus) also posted a link for them on Amazon

Thanks. It always helps to have an idea what you are looking for.  As part of my camera install, I plan to put on an air deflector over the engine air intake.  I'm thinking a design that is slightly different than John H's.  I plan to mount mine directly to the metal air intake cover.  I'll plan to post some pictures when it is done.

It is a small adapter to allow you to connect a BNC connector to a RCA jack on the Javilina connector.

I looked for connectors and found some on Amazon. Some were pretty cheap, but I could not determine which variety I need.

I have not dug into the bowels of the rear cabinet and have not (yet) been able to see the rear of the dash unit. I *assume* that the cable has female BNC on each end, and the camera and monitor have male BNC connectors. I would also assume that new cameras and monitors would have female RCA, expecting male RCA cables.

Are these assumptions correct? If so, I should need two adapters for the cable that are female BNC to male RCA; and two adapters for the old equipment that are male BNC to female RCA connectors. Is that correct?

What kinds of connectors have you "early adopters" used? I hate to buy the wrong type of adapters.

The prices were pretty low for quantities of ten, which means I will have some extras after I make the purchase. Let me know if anyone else needs some of these leftover adapters.

Thanks,

Trent

I have now removed my camera.  It is a panasonic with a multi-pin din connector.  I plan to go wireless and will only need to tap the existing wiring for power.  I plan to cut the wire off the panasonic camera and use that to connect to the new camera.  Then I'll just plug the din connector back together to power the camera.  As I make progress, I'll plan to post some pictures and describe what I find.

If I need a bnc connector, it should only be at the front end.
