Title: Gaggenau Won't Light
Post by: FormerU320Family on August 19, 2015, 10:54:55 pm
Well, well, well.  This has been an interesting day.  Those who are active on the Forum have seen (and big thanks, responded to) our posts about battery voltages and wheel studs.  We're so thankful for all of you!  We're determined to make it through our first year of FT ownership and full-timing.

New question:  as we are dry camping in the tire dealer's parking lot, we thought we would light the two-burner stove. Burns propane.  No problem, right?

Wrong, for us.  Whatever powers the igniters that normally work by pressing the knob down, did NOT work tonight.  Are those 120V or should the stove work on 12V DC?

The igniters work on 120 VAC. However you can light the burners with a match. Just turn the burner on and apply the flame, we use a grill lighter to light our burners while boondocking.

Richard, we can light our stove while boondocking.  Just make sure your inverter is on. With that on, we can light the stove without a lighter or match.

If stove has not been used in a long while it will take time for the propane to reach to burners thru the piping, and that assumes that the valve at the tank is on and there is propane in the tank with a working regulator.

...that assumes that the valve at the tank is on and there is propane in the tank...
...And knowing there is propane in the tank assumes your tank gauge is reading correctly.  You should have 2 gauges - a electronic gauge somewhere inside the coach (where depends on year/model), and a mechanical gauge on the tank.  Neither of ours seem to work very well, so I just regularly get the propane tank topped off whenever it is convenient (and where the price is cheap).  You only pay for what they put in the tank, so it's not like you're wasting any money.  8)

Thanks everyone.  We must have 120V igniters, because when we pulled out our butane grill lighter, the cooktop fired right up.  It has always worked great (and we do watch our propane levels).  It was just a surprise that with no 120V, it wouldn't light.  Thanks for confirming that was it.

Gaggenau burner is not an RV product and is made for stick homes who only have 120-volts.  Some gas appliances use a piezo generator to create a spark, so they would not need 12v or 120v.

The Gaggenau cook top igniters are 110v. If you look at the 110v wiring diagrams in your FT manual you will see which circuit powers the Gaggenau.  If you pull the drawers out of the kitchen cabinets under the Gaggenau you will see where it is plugged in. If there is no clicking then maybe the circuit breaker has popped open.

Even with power they may not light the burner if the black metal caps have been jarred out of place.  If you have a hard time lighting them or they won't stay lit check this caps.

The Gaggenau will not stay lit until they warm up and (likely) a themocouple keeps the gas supply valve open.  Lighting them with a lighter or a match will still take about 10 seconds for this to happen.  This is a safety thing.  Flame out,  then the gas shuts off.  A good thing.
