Title: Replacement fuel pre-filter
Post by: Lon and Cheryl on August 22, 2015, 11:24:06 pm
I would like to replace my Winn fuel pre-filter.
I prefer simple but do like the idea of a priming pump.
What is the current forum recommended replacement?
Where did you purchase?
Thanks.

I used a Racor 7125R30. That's a 125 gph flow rate, with a 30 micron filter.  Integrated prime pump which will easily prime even with lines to the tank completely airlocked.  Comes with small control panel and wiring harness.  324.00 from National Fleet Parts about 6 mos ago.
Call them rather than ordering online, good service fast ship.  Nice piece of kit.

BTW, fittings are ORB, o ring boss, standard hydraulic fittings available at any auto parts store that fabricates hyd lines.

Similar to Chuck's recommendation is the Parker 790R30. 90 gph. Here it is in my 95.

We have the  Parker 790R30 also. Replacement filters are available at most parts stores and truck shops.  Seems like it came from MHC Kenworth.    Ours is mounted in same location as jor's.

One nice thing about these units is they have what appears to be a peristalic pump in them, they can pull a prime even with lots of air in the lines.  They have extra ports, supplied with plugs, if you wish to add gauges. They can mount in same location as winn filter but bolt pattern is slightly different so hole drilling or a fabricated bracket is needed.  IIRC, a swivel 90 allowed existing lines to connect. There's a Schrader purge port to bleed air, once bled you can also purge air from secondary filter with it.

Im pretty sure the one I spec'd comes with the upgrade filter thus the 125 in the part no.  It's a large filter compared to the r90.

I havn't do it yet BUT,

On my boat I plumbed in an outboard motor squeeze bulb

--------
!        !      valve                          valve
!        !--<----X----------------------X-------<--feed from tank---
!        !          !                                !
!        !          L __squeeze bulb ____J
--------

I would turn the valves to the by-pass position
and left the filter slightly cracked,
When diesel began to run out the top tightened the filter.

Returned the valves to the straight through position.
The fact that the squeeze bulb might not be high quality hose isn't significant. It is only in the line when filling the primary filter.

You could use an inexpensive Facet fuel pump (like on the generator) if you wanted to use electrons to do the work but then you would have to worry about its fuel filter as well.

Elliott,

Make sure that "made for gasoline" marine bulb is diesel compatible.
