Oh my, what I would have given to have one of those on top of my 73 VW Campmobile for the 17 years we drove it around!  But a great idea for those that don't want to run the generator and roof airs as they drive.  Sure no shortage of roof space above my saloon.

Excellent posts! The smaller one could be run off solar panels. 660 watts would not be a problem in summer with the sun up high and I wouldn't have to tilt them. On the other hand, it's too small to really cool the main salon.

The larger units would be perfect. Just have to run fat wires for 12V up top. Our Detroit and probably others would easily take a second alternator but would have to be a big one.

Perhaps the AC compressor could be removed from the engine, an large alternator installed and a small 12V AC unit installed on the other side of the GV's front bulkhead and the cool air plumbed into the cab.

Food for thought.

Add a curtain that pulls across behind the seats to close off the driver compartment when going down the road.  Would help keep the cold air up front.  I think one Forum member already uses this method...

We had a curtain in our Chevy Van in '72...used it to go on our honeymoon up Route 1 in California.

I like the curtain idea but I would not want to give up the visibility looking back on the right for oncoming ramp traffic and to the left when we are coming down an on ramp.

Maybe a clear something?  I would bet something like a sun screen would let you see through and stop enough air movement to be helpful.

Driving across ND and MT this summer it was 105-110 by noon.  We had never done it before but started up the gen and turned on the AC, front and rear for a couple hours before we stopped for the day. It made a huge difference.

I wont comment on these units because I have not had one just like these BUT I just removed a Bergstrom 12 volt system from one of my trucks that wasn't worth having on board... Bergstrom  tells that the system isn't designed to cool down an area rather it supposed to maintain an area that's already cool.. didn't do that either... Maybe these units are a better mouse trap but one will have to be demonstrated to me.. As of this minute I have no use for a 12 volt system or any other that doesn't perform in our heat..

I did salvage 4 bodacious deep cycle gel batteries that ran the unit.. 1 will go in the coach.. 2 in my fishing boat and 1 I hope to maintain with trickle charge for use down the road... That's all the good I got out of that new unit.

I was thinking of giving mine away Stump but I may wait on someone that wants to trade something for it... After I tell them my experience with it I don't expect much of a prize in trade.

I told her "Why yes, I do fly jets", and she was hooked.  8)  (I didn't mention it was a BUFF)

Peter:  That would be best...don't want to offend the delicate sensibilities out there.

Tim:  Yes...that is the PG version.

John:  That's just part of a B-52...4 BIG-A** tires.  Below is a BUFF in all its glory (jungle paint + conventional weapons dates the photos).

At the Strategic Air and Space Museum near Ashland NE.  B52 cockpit.  Pretty nice museum.  They have a lot to restore since most of this stuff has been stored outside.

Another real surprise was the Army 8th Airforce museum in Savannah, GA. Don't miss it.

Those were crappy missions during vietnam. Way too many bombers were lost. Way before my time, too.

BACK TO THE SUBJECT

Pierce, the utube video had a split system just where the battery compartment was. It looked like they put it in a closet, using the airbox above the heater
