Title: Attaching a Magnet
Post by: Old Hippie on November 11, 2015, 10:27:11 am
I am trying to attach a small round magnet (3/8 "x 1/8 thick) to my entry door frame. It will be used to hold the screen door closed without having to use the door latch.  I have tried super glue which will work for a while but will eventually come loose.
Any ideas on how to attach this rare earth magnet so it will not come off? Maybe epoxy or something like that?

There is a product called "Goop" it is flexible and holds very well I have used it on many repairs. Fuel and gas do affect it.

OH. Rockler has rare earth magnet holders, a small metal cup that attaches with a screw and the the magnet fits into it.  The they have a small metal plate also screw attached for the othe side. Works great. I use them when I want a wooden door or something to stay put with magnets.

A 3/8" magnet might be too small to be as secure as you want it to be.

Or use 3M VHB tape to hold it on.

3M 5200 might works but takes a long time to cure up.

Gorrilla glue (urethane glue) likes porous surfaces better than metals and will run on a vertical surface.  If you use it on porous surfaces, make them damp first and mist the surface of any squeeze out to make it set up and cure faster.  These are moisture cure glues.  They work less well in very dry climates. It also expands a bit (like foam insulation) and is somewhat flexible after cure when compared to other glues.

Shoe Goo--kind of like GOOP or silicone adhesive.
Dab of Shoe Goo on back of the magnet, then tape the magnet in place on the Shoe Goo (or whatever you use) then let adhesive cure overnight.

Probably the only difference is packaging and price.
