Title: VDO odometer
Post by: craneman on November 13, 2015, 04:28:44 pm
Hello I am new to the forums having just purchased a 1999 U320 needing lots of help.
One of the first things in order would be to be able to read Mileage
The 1999 U320 VDO speedometer has lost the lcd display on the odometer. Does anyone know if the milage is stored in the speedometer or in the ecm? Also has anyone had one repaired or know where to get a exact replacement?

Forum search is your friend.  Lots of info on VDO odometer.  Here is one of the most recent search "hits"

Another solution is to get VMSPC. Gives you lots of other information too. Some use it instead of installed instruments.

The mileage data are stored in the engine computer. The new speedometer will read 0.0 unless you can get a shop to set it to the value stored in the engine computer. I think someone here has previously mentioned shops  that will do the reset.

I just had mine done by Lauderdale Speedometer.  You could still see the mileage sometimes and they set it for me to the reading when I removed it.  I don't know if they can pull the mileage from the speedo if you send it in without telling them what it should be.

It was about $200 (all in with shipping home) to repair mine vice $105 plus reprograming fees and shipping for a new one.  The trip Odometer works now too!  You would need to supply the preprograming info for them if you buy a new one.

Turn around time was about 2-3 days plus shipping time each way.  New display looks great.

I'd call and ask them about options.  They are very helpful.

I did call them and if I send them mine he can set the correct pulse on a new one to make it read correct speed and the person I spoke to said my ecm is holding my odometer reading he would set a new one to read it

I bought one on ebay and had Lauderdale speedometer set the odometer. I believe this is the same one.
