Title: 3M Extreme Sealing Tape and Other Great Tapes
Post by: Michael & Jackie on November 21, 2015, 12:45:11 am
I mentioned this tape in January 2012 (Emergency Sealing Tape, Cap with LEDs (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=14576.msg85324#msg85324)).  My son-in-law mentioned it to Dave Cobb when we were together last summer and Dave called me recently to see if I could get him some for roof work.

Byron and John Haygarth and I, joined by wives, had lunch yesterday and I mentioned this tape.  I have a small roll that my son-in-law sent for Dave and I have pilfered a small bit for Byron and John to examine, maybe try.  I attached some information about it, hope you can read it.

I may be able to send a few of you a small sample if you want to try it.  I can cut it off and rewind a foot or so of it.  Very very sticky, of course.  Withstands UV, rain, heat.  Let me know by pm your address if want a bit to examine.  At the moment most sizes are unavailable from Amazon.  May get at local RV supply shop as,

It is intended for RVs.  If a leak in a roof,  use this to "get by" until you repair.  However, you could elect to leave it in place.  The info says that it sticks on contact to many metals, plastic without drying time and will conform over contours, edges, rivets and screw heads to provide a water tight seal.  Holds through sun, rain, snow, extreme temperature variations and is flexible.

Might look on web, "3M Extreme Sealing Tape", see more.  If you want more than a little sample, James told me the 4411N size roll, 1-1/2 x 5 yds is $15.09 and whereas the full roll best option is the 4412N at 2 inch x 18 yds for $58.26. I can give you phone number to order if want.

I will carry some in the coach that if someone needs help, this may work.

Looks like a good product.  Since it probably would not be used often, I wonder about the "shelf life" when carried in a RV tool box?

When I checked a bit ago, Amazon not have the tape.  Today they say they have a small roll for about $11, nine rolls in stock.  The other rolls are out of stock (I think it means they will get more though)  However, one of the larger rolls is about $80 with shipping.  I think this small roll for $11, free shipping if you are a prime member, is a good buy.  From what I read about it, I would get one....cheap versus lots of other coach things!

I am going to ask son-in-law James about shelf life.  Would be a good thing to know....and I wonder about keeping it a fairly warm bay, but just guess that would be fine.

And as a further idea....John Haygarth reminded me of the many uses....get some to the double sided VHB tape.  Great 3M product. And about $7 from Amazon with free prime shipping, a no brainer to try.

This sounds a lot like Etrnabond tape.  I've had some in my tool box for 5-6 years and it is doing fine.  Great stuff to have around but hard to get off.  It really sticks.

When the Airstream got wrecked, I bought some of that tape to cover the damage, great stuff! I still have a roll left a year later & hope to never have to use it!

I carry a roll of this with me in case I need to tape up a slideout, or do something similar.
30 day clean peel;
3M Outdoor Masking Poly Tape 5903 Red, 48 mm x 54.8 m (Pack of 1): Amazon.com... (http://www.amazon.com/3M-Outdoor-Masking-Poly-Tape/dp/B004VB06WG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448159860&sr=8-1&keywords=3M+Outdoor+Masking+Poly+Tape+5903)

And this tape is like Eternabond without the foil;
ProTapes Pro Flex Flexible Butyl All Weather Patch and Shield Repair Tape,... (http://www.amazon.com/ProTapes-Pro-Flexible-Weather-Shield/dp/B00DYN39YE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1448160119&sr=8-3&keywords=ProTapes+Pro+Flex+Flexible+Butyl+All+Weather+Patch+and+Shield+Repair+Tape)
It's more permanent but may not be UV resistant.

And while we're on the topic of great tape, I always carry a roll or two of 3M Scotch Tough Duct Tape, No Residue.
Scotch Tough Duct Tape, No Residue, 1.88-Inch by 20-Yard - No Residue Tape... (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014LQK58?keywords=3m%20no%20residue%20masking%20tape&qid=1448179869&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2)

I've had wires taped on the roof with that tape for a full year (including a hot summer)  and removed it with no residue.  Don't even think about using another kind of duct tape.

Sometimes you can find it at Home Depot for ~$9 (cheaper than Amazon.)

As for temperatures on storing the 3M Extreme Sealing tape, my son-in-law James wrote this.....

"ok to store at 90 deg .  Can have issues with oozing off the liner at 100+.  The tape has 225f operating temp. So even if it oozes  and you can get it off the liner it's still good"

When I began this it was only for the Extreme Sealing.  But it has taken on an added value for me as we cover other such tapes and sealants.  Thanks to all that added in, good to know and carry some of those others too.  Weighs little, not take much room, so useful.

(My son-in-law also gave me some gorilla tape, not sure it needed though as see none around where we go!  Guess just a stronger duct tape.)

I've been using the EternaBond Mastic without issue.

Via Ebay, it's as reasonable as I've been able to find.  pc

Gorilla Tape--I found that it was very hard to see out the entry door while I was in the co-pilot seat because of the screen material in the screen door.  I removed it and replaced it with a plexiglass insert I got from a glass shop.  They put a narrow aluminum frame on it and I installed it with 3" wide black Gorilla tape on each side.  It matches the door finish really well and has been very durable.  Almost unnoticeable unless you are looking for it.  Much easier to see out the right front while riding.
