Title: Replacement for KVH TracVision system: 1999 U295
Post by: JamieKimble on December 01, 2015, 07:01:28 pm
I own a 1999 U295 model that had a KVH TracVision installed at some point after the initial build.  I never did use the system because we don't watch that much TV when traveling.  Spoke to Foretravel this week and they verified the system was installed after the build, so they were unable to give me the model number.  Long story short, the dome decided to take a different route last weekend on our trip to Key Largo.  One garbage bag and some Gorilla Tape and new dome was in place.  I was going to replace the dome, but Foretravel no longer carries them, but they suggested perhaps Ebay for any remaining artifacts that may still be around.

I can go that route, but I'm considering putting in a new system and get this one working right for the little one to watch some TV from time to time.  I don't need a system that tracks for use during driving, so that should keep costs down.  I don't want to carry a dish around and manually line it up.  What are most folks using these days when replacing the older systems ?

Appreciate any feedback.

Jamie

Many people believe the Winegard Trav'ler to be the best system available. Do you have Dish or DirectTv?

Best choice for us was a DirecTV Trav'ler three satellite, single wire automatic dish.  And a Genie DVR receiver. I installed it myself, not too hard.  This lets us get three satellites at the same time, seamlessly switch from on to another and record and watch up to 5 programs at once.  It is reasonably easy to change your mobile acount service address so that you get local TV stations.  With a mobile account you can suspend your service for periods when you are not using it.  The only place we have had trouble getting a signal was in heavily wooded campgrounds.

There are lots of options at a wide range of costs.  It pays to check them out.  Basically you can choose DirecTV or Dish and then hardware.  If you are getting a mobile account and don't want to do it yourself then you have to go to an RV dealer or someone else who will install and set it up.  DirecTV and Dish will set it up in your home but not in your RV.  We have a home DirecTV dish and the one on the coach and move the Genie receiver back and forth as needed.

Glad to help you figure this out.  It is a bit complicated.  i got a lot of help when I did mine.

And I have a RF Mogul dish with Dish TV.

Mobile Satellite Systems, Internet, SNG, VSAT, TV (http://rfmogul.com/Mobile_Satellite_TV.html)

Main advantage is that dish is about 20% bigger than Winegard. Also dish controller is in a separate box inside the coach instead of mounted on the roof in in the dish assembly. Makes it easier to replace the controller if ever required. You can also update the controller with a usb stick from the front panel. Does cost a few bucks more than the Winegard.

Do some research then DWMYH...

Appreciate the feedback from everyone.  So the dish w/o the dome is fine during transport ?  I would have never guessed that to be the case.  And I have to ask: DWMYH = ?  This is a new one to me !

I currently have an older DirecTV box, so I expect to have to upgrade this unit when I swap the antenna.

There is a lot of discussion regarding the Winegard Trav'ler in the technology forum at the iRV2.com Website.
