Title: What's the mileage on your coach?
Post by: FourTravelers on December 02, 2015, 11:28:01 am
Foretravels are built to last several hundred thousand miles before a major rebuild is neccessary. That's what I've read many times.
I thought it would be interesting to see just how many miles are on our forum members coaches......without haveing a major rebuild done.

Our 95 has 89,000, considered low mileage I suppose?

Our '93 U280 has 175,500...still running perfectly!  Other than belts/filters, everything on the engine is original (except the lift pump, fuel shutoff solenoid, and belt idlers - all of which were still working when I replaced them - preventative maintenance).

Ours is at 170,000. Looking at my files from the PO, I see nothing serious done to the engine or the trans, though I do have Papa Brett on my butt to service/replace the air dryer. The Airstream/Isuzu had 248,000 when we moved her on, with nothing but a couple of turbos. On our GV , just about everything mentioned in this thread has either been serviced/replaced!

Mine is a 92 U280, it has 237,000. Replaced lift pump, fuel shut off solenoid, alternator plus normal ware items. That includes 8 trips to Alaska.

Our 2001 U270 had 62000 on it when we bought it, now 129,700 miles.  Had the valves adjusted in 2014- the only time the engine cover has been off.  Also had some oil seals replaced at the same time.  We live full time in our coach and plan to do so for 10, 15, or however long we are able to do so.  Looks like we need to get moving to catch some of you................. ^.^d

Wow, 237 is inspiring.

Ours is at 156,000. 1995 U280.
With an engine re-sleeved at 70,000 due to an air cleaner issue. Guess we can't blame Foretravel or Cummins for that one.

Our '93 U300 has just short of 90K miles. Replaced batteries, belts when we bought it. PM, minor bulbs, water heater board, etc since with only one airbag costing over $100. Other than that, it's been only improvements we made. Zero coach bucks in 6 years of ownership.

We have about 165,000 on our 1995 U320. I would like to wear it out some day--but I suspect old age will catch up to me before I can get it to 1,000,000 miles!

We are at 71K miles on our 2001 U320.  About 5K since the engine was rebuilt after an air filter failed. We have spent about 3 coach bucks on repairs (including the engine and batteries).  Plus normal maintenance.  Plus upgrades we chose to do.  We are due for 6 new tires over the next 16 months.

I have 58k on my 2001 U320.  Which seems very low. But has 3000+ hours on gen set which seems like a lot.

Only had it for a year now, have replaced shocks and re-install a new secondary fuel filter the PO had removed.

I still go to work everyday so "rocket" is only used for weekend racing trips (for now). And now that winter has arrived in BC, it will sit in a warm shop until April.

I was about to be pretty proud of my 195,000 then John44 posted... :(

Only problem has been with the hydraulic pump which is not "really" an engine problem. (it was engineered/added on by FOT) It lasted 185,000. Can't complain too much.

All of your responses are inspiring.  I have been leary to buy a coach with 100k miles on it.  I was afraid that there would be so many needed major repairs that it would be cost prohibitive to buy older and less expensive.  For me, this has been one of the more informative threads.

I do have one more question...I hear the term "Coach Bucks" used frequently.  What is one coach buck equal to?

Thanks All,

Thanks for the replies................. most post their coach info in their signatures but it's interesting to know the mileage on them also.

Its encouraging to read about coaches with 200K and 300K plus miles without major repairs.

Also nice to know there are still some very low mileage older coaches out there too!

There is another side to the service records or lack of them.

My personal experience is to assume everything not recently updated needs it.

IF you start over replacing most of the wear and service parts then in essence you are starting over and should have a long term reliable coach.

Like the coach was new.

I almost prefer to go through it myself.  New everything mechanical.  Too many years in the biz and taking used coaches out rving.

Of course it helps if the price paid reflects the needed work.

The hidden gem is nice and does happen.

....just hit 50,000 at NAC 1st of November....coach had sat for about 8 years, got her at 41,000 in Nov. '13 & didn't even drive her til March 2014.....barely broken in.....a few serious coach bucks making her "new" again, but well worth it....all major systems were good though, so mostly upgrades & replacing the basics: tires, air bags, fuel lines, roof coating, heating system, etc.....all else is cosmetic....paint, interior (windows, floors, etc.), entry steps, headlights/tail lights (next)....worth it, totally worth every penny....

What exactly "failed"?  Paper filter come apart and went into the engine?

Pretty close.  Air filter got wet.  It was a cheap one put in by PO.  Pretty much destroyed the engine.  North of $25K to rebuild, insurance covered the repair.

114,000 or so, bought it with 60,000 7 years ago

one was repaired (bulkhead) a few years ago at N RV per James H. Had 450,000 miles on it, used as a construction remote office, towed a VERY heavy trailer everywhere it went.

wouldn't worry about any mileage on a FT coach that was well maintained

Hi John,
Nice to know that a little or underused coach doesn't have to have more than its share of problems just because it sat for long periods. I remember seeing it when you got it home... the inside looked absolutely new, and the original James Stallings factory paint job was in incredible shape, especially once you painstakingly removed that hideously weathered 3M shield off of the front cap...

Aircraft bucks are $10K. If an aircraft turbine coughs, it's lots and lots of them.

We're now at 151,000 miles.  I do annual PM, and usually spend $2-3k more on accessories and other maintenance.  I can always find something I want to upgrade, flush or shine or just check to assure myself all is good.  I've done tires, wear items, flushed and changed all fluids, belts and hoses over the last 50k miles.  At 131K the Allison let me down and took 10 coach bucks for a factory rebuild.  I did replace the air compressor once.  It gets what it needs to stay happy.

160,000 which is over 100,000 since we bought it 7 years ago.  That's 10K a year, which is about the minimum I'd want to see if I were buying a coach.  Every service task has been performed on schedule, and I have the records to prove it.

We can offer two answers: a little less than 80,000 on the dash gauge, or about 120,000 if we believe Silverleaf's reading of the ECM. We discussed this conundrum in a different thread on the Forum. Best guess is that the dash gauge was replaced, but not stickered under the dash instrument hood.

Agree with Brett.  I'd rather see (or actively put on the coach) a certain amount of use, than to let it sit.  We finally sold our plane when I didn't have time to fly enough and it was just sitting. Machines need to be exercised (IMHO). Leaving Sunday for some exercise.  ;-)

There is an old saying that it's better to wear out than to rust out. I believe it's almost impossible to "wear out" a Foretravel that's been properly maintained. The drivetrain is essentially the same as is found on semis that run for somewhere around a million miles before retirement and I don't see any chance we'll ever get even close to that with ours--although it would certainly be fun trying!

In math terms
$50,000.00 @ 9mpg at today's price of fuel(2.00) = 225,000 miles
@48 mph average is 10800 hours of driving
It's 64 weeks 24 hrs a day
Or average hours driven per week.. 28 so it's 385.7 weeks
Or 7.42 years

My dad has logged 357K miles wore out 3 motorhome in 30+yrs retirement, he's 87
I HOPE TO HAVE THAT MUCH FUN,
WEAR OUT MY FORETRAVEL... LOL

Averaging around 5k miles a year but this one will be 10k. Driven a long way in Mexico too. Minor issues, mostly this trip so no complaints and try to do all service repairs myself. Have saved thousands luckily.
Interior upgrades have improved the inside immensly and made it suit us. Around 10mpg even towing.

We just got our 99 U270 two weeks ago with 30500 miles, drove home from spokane to Issaquah Wa and into the shop for service so about 30900ish.  Runs strong but lots of age related issues we will work thru.  havent had a chance to check fuel consumption but I would be happy with 9ish.  My 5.3 Chevy only got 9 pulling our Artic Fox 8000lbs  no toad yet, probably when we can be out for extended trips  right now just long weekends withing 4 hours of home

It's maintenance, maintenance, maintenance........ a lot of older higher mileage coaches still going strong.

We bought our 1995 U320 in November of 2012 with 151,000 miles on it. When we put it into indoor storage last November it had 165,000 miles on it. Hope to build miles at a faster rate once we fully retire.

There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about a "high mileage" Foretravel if it's been properly used and maintained!

Have you figured out the average age?  I recall a statistic that the typical RV is driven 7000 miles/year.

Our 2003 had 23K when we bought it in 2004; it now has just over 90K (our 2006 and 2011 trips, were all closer to home than usual).

There was a couple at the MC GV in October who got their 45 year MC award and their 600,000 mile MC award.  They were just about to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary.  All very amazing acomplishments.  They had several Foretravels.  I guess they were hooked.  They averaged more than 13,300 miles a year over 45 years!

I will be very happy to get to 100,000 miles.

The average age of our coaches, our dedication to keep them running and the amount we use them reflects well on our community.

Happy to be here with all of you.  Roger

I love excel......

Updated numbers

74 coaches          9,539,450 miles.    128,911 mile average    6,748 miles per year average    20 year old average

Largest years reporting    1995  11 units        2001    9  units    1989 & 1993  7 units each
Only 1 unit newer than 2003 and nothing older than a 1989

My coach has averaged only 3867 miles per year, which puts me in 11th place for least miles/per/year.

Did the factory have an issue in 1998 as only one has reported and every other year around it has at least a half a dozen?

Steve.

PS.  Can you tell the importing into Canada is a little slow right now.

Bought our coach in late July with 153,600.    Recently did the first 6000 mile oil change after 7 months of ownership. New rear brakes and new alternator. Brakes were no surprise, I new that going in.

At this rate, it will be 10,000 ish in the first year. Love it, but DW loves it even more. She's excited to be able to take her "lifestyle" with her.

At those miles per month, were ahead of of the curve :)  hope to stay there.

We purchased our 97 270 in late December 2015 with 78,000 and now 83,000.  I decided to bring it up to date mechanically by changing everything as if it had not been done.  At 19 and sitting for 3 years if it was rubber it came out.  Only surprise was steering box seals blowing in CA and knowing what I know now I would have replaced it in the beginning as well.  Should see 15 - 20k this year.  I did not expect the great mileage which is within 1-1.5 mpg of the Ram 5.9 pulling the AF.

I believe our 93 U300 has had three owners. It has not quite 87000 miles and had 82500 when I bought it in 2012 from Mr. Bill Warren in Alabama. He told me he bought it in Texas.  The records show originally purchased from from Foretravel by E. R. Mayo.  I was extremely fortunate to get this one with low mileage at a price I couldn't pass on after looking for three years.  Mr. Warren had it for about six years prior but didn't travel much in it. I found out after I bought it that he did spend the coach bucks on a new hydraulic fan pump, fan motor kits, generator, transfer switch, power steering pump, new dash and seat upholstery,  and new Michelins!

I've replaced the two rear ride height valves, two front slack adjusters, one front air tank valve, refrigerator, bathroom fan kit, original inverter with another one (thanks to Irwin), hydraulic fan belt, engine and generator oil & filters, transmission oil and filter with some maintenance (drop the pan and clean the valve body & replace a couple of direction switches), batteries, solenoids, and repaired the HWH control unit.  She runs like a top and is road ready except for new tires and some roof caulking. I can only take a couple of short road trips a year and excercise it (50 miles) every two weeks.  I hope to change that in the near future and start trying to catch up to the rest of my forum buddies!

My coach does have four 100,000 mile stars on it from the original owner's motorhome travels.  Does that mean one star for every  100,000 miles traveled?..........400,000 miles....Wow!

Jerry

Thanks for the breakdown, Steve. In "our prime" we'd grab 10k a year; a lot of miles and a lot of parking lots since I was still working and had limited time "to enjoy", which was b.s. in retrospect. These days, retired, with a fresh coach, 300 miles a day is a "push", and I know now to just pull in waay before sunset, open up a cold one,  have a nice dinner (avoid t.v./ internet, etc.) and enjoy one of life's pleasures with your honey!

I bought my coach in Oct 2014.  Since then I have put 2300 km on it, or 1435 miles. Used it only 5 times last summer, "Rocket" spends the winters in a heated shop waiting for race season.  This is probably my last year racing, so maybe we will use it more.  Right now we call it our $80,000 ice maker.
The coach got more use last year than my 72 Chevelle convertible @  297 miles or my 06 SLK55 AMG roadster @ 592 miles.

Time to sell the business, retire and use some of my toys.  Or keep working and buy some more.

Steve

Adding my '81 that I retired in 2012 but will not part with at this time. It had 43,000 when I bought it in 1994 and now has 89,001 after 18 years only 46,000 mi. That is the problem with only getting to use it twice a year to go fishing and to NASCAR Phoenix. When I retire the '99 will not suffer that fate.

November 2014, when I bought it, my '03 had 58,231. Now, sitting in I-O-Way, 1000 miles from home base, it has 73,900. Had it serviced at MOT, and replaced the fuel filters along the side of road in Washington last summer. Been border to border and coast to coast to coast. Pretty good ride so far, I'd say.

We bought our new 1999 U270 from Foretravel of Tennesse, and put 465000 miles on it over the next six years, using it as a mobile office.  I did NO significant engine work, although I rebuilt the transmission twice.  We traded back to the same dealership, on a used 2000 U270 on which we put over 100000 miles in the next three years.

The manager had a picture of our coach with the mileage on it in his office for a while,.......I think he made a lot of money on that deal.

We miss both of our FT's alot.

Title: Re: What's the mileage on your coach?

"Tell me about the turbo replacement if you could?  Symptoms?"

Symptoms - lack of hp. Turned out to be a by-product of the resonator install done in NAC. Turbo was not re-installed properly but no visual, audible or flatland driving indication. Got to the hills and couldn't keep up with loaded 18's. Multiple techs confirmed turbo band clamp was installed improperly (one found the missing nut still riding nearby on the frame rail). Not sure why the band was removed at all but the turbo was toast. Fortunately no collateral damage & easy repair but shop in NAC taking no responsibility.

Mike,

Suggestion while in storage:
Fuel tank full.  Add an anti-gel if storing with summer or fall (i.e. #2 diesel) into below freezing temperatures.  Walmart sell PS brand.
Add a biocide such as Biobor JF if storing for more than 3 months.

Do NOT, repeat NOT start the engine unless you can drive a minimum of 25 highway miles.  You can not get the OIL hot enough without driving under a load to get the moisture out of the crankcase.

Fuel is full..just filled it three weeks ago. I have lots of Lucus oil fuel treatment in it now...but I will add the other stuff. Thanks for the warning on the running of it. I ran it for 30 minutes also ran generator with load on it...but I will go drive it unless conditions are too bad...Thanks for the tip. I'm a real newbie to this quality of coach...scares me a little. You guys have been amazing and I really appreciate the help..

What Brett said......just after we bought this coach, a CAT dealer suggested I start the coach every two weeks for 1/2 hr. WRONG!
I think they may have thought that was to keep our starter batteries up and (misguided) that was good for the engine!  :D

Sounds like maybe the 2 parts that the clamp holds together may have caused the turbo to bind and not spin.If this shop in NAC
actually left the nut off and caused the problem and now refuse any responsibility maybe they should be named, not flamed.
Not sure why this is considered flaming. I thought was responding to a question but maybe it should have been by PM.
Title: Re: What's the mileage on your coach?

What exactly was the damage to the turbo. As Brett said, exhaust side is pretty solid, and unless you actually poke something into the unit and damage the blades of the turbine, hard to hurt.

I was looking at a picture of our odometer when we got the coach in Oct 2014 it was 129020
I replaced the speedo at 136784 it had stopped working, but I had had issues with it on and off for quite some time. New speedo says 4709
We've been about 13,000 miles in 2 years owning this! give or take a couple hundred. Hopefully many many more in our future.  :))

Old forum, but thought I would ad. We just bought ours with 104K. It's a 97 U295 36'. Maintenance is everything, and Roland took really good care of this one.
We plan to drive maybe 4K a year, because my wife still works. At that rate, it will have 144K on it in 10 years. I am 69, you can do the math. I am sure it will be our last MH. That is why we bought a Foretravel. Didn't have any worry about buying a coach with 104K miles. It's not a gas coach

33.000 miles...We've put about 2,000 on it since we bought last Sept. Didn't use it until May this year. It was bought new and ran for two years...then it sat..always inside until about three years ago...it was out and used a couple times and then I bought it. No plans for full time use but we have taken 9 close trips this season and our big vacation comes in four weeks...then we will see 1900 miles of use...nothing to most of you..lol

Updating this old thread after our recent "SouthWest" trip, we now have over 116,000 on our "Oldfaithful". We had almost 87,000 on her when we purchased it in 2015. We have a Fall trip planned that will add over 1000 miles to that number. That will put us at about 10,000 per year since owned.  ;D

Hope to be able to keep that average per year until retirement......... Whenever that will be!  ::)

Just rolled over 70,000 miles. Since this is a 1990 Grand Villa that's only 2,500 miles per year.  2 PO owners not much for using it.Stored inside all it's life so looking stellar. Done lots of upgrades infrastructuraly but have decided to keep the flavor of the coach retro. Everyone who sees it wherever we are love it. Especially the sound of that Detroit Diesel. Even more  under load. When we pulled out of Rivers Edge RV Park in Brookings  OR on that steep, long driveway out, 2100 RPM turbo was singing and you could hear the grinder ramming air in. Lori looked out the window down into the park and everyone outside was looking our way . Sweet! We plan on using it a lot more than it has been. Just finished our longest trip yet ( 24 days ) and been out about 40 days this year and lots more to come.

Just over 100,000 miles on the ODO but it was broken for a while with the PO. Gallons used times the DDEC MPG total another 5K or so. No coach bucks in almost 9 years. Biggest was a couple of airbags and the replacement of the three engine batteries. Have done a lot of optional improvements including solar. Think we were second of solar Foretravel after the great Paul Smith. Sure miss his posts. Getting ready to paint the roof, install a propane fired block heater and install day/night blinds. Still looking for a rear engine door.

I'm installing our new 4K TV tonight. A 49 inch TCL will replace a Samsung 40 inch. Costco has the 49" 4K TCL smart TV with Roku, HDR, etc. for $299. A real steal.

1993 U300, 36 feet, Detroit 6V-92TA with Jake brake, Four 285 watt 36 volt Yingli panels on the roof, Midnite 150 controller and a 2005 Toyota RAV4 AWD 5 speed for a toad.

We just returned from a short trip to Virginia, the odometer rolled past 132,000 just before we returned home. That's a little over 45,000 in the past five years. The old gal has taken us to a lot of awesome places in those 45K miles!    ^.^d

2000 U295 36ft bought in 2009 with  68k now has 124k and used mainly in winter months.
Except for one non major issue in 2015 with the ECU have not really had any problems with it. Just routine stuff.

I have a 1987 Foretravel Gran Villa pusher with 76000 miles on her with a 460 ford. The previous owner replaced the fridge, the generator, the water heater, new shocks and new tires. He really loved her and took really good care of her. I am truly blessed to have found this deal when I did. The engine has 40 thousand miles on it and the tranny has 3000 miles on it. I've replaced the dashboard ignition and the engine solenoid. She came with a small tv over the windshield and a large tv in the back bedroom. Has a really nice AM FM radio with  a cd player in the dash.  What more can  a man ask for?

Our 1995 U320SE currently has 179738.7 miles on it (original engine and transmission) and is ready for many, many more. I would like to live long enough to actually wear it out, but I suspect that task may fall to one of our grandchildren. What a great coach!

Bought ours in 2015, it had 87,000 plus or minus a few.

5-1/2 years later, she now has 133,000, would love to put another 133,000 on her before hanging up the keys.

I enjoy driving it...... even on our worn out, pot hole and patch filled interstates.

Took a trip 2 years ago with a fellow from down south who bought a new Foretravel in the late 90's.  Got going and never looked back.  He had 342,000 on that coach and it looked and performed great.  He is not a full timer either.  Not using his name as I didn't ask his permission but it's a fact.  God bless him.  Wonderful fellow.

What is your model # under the VIN?

Located under the VIN on the ID Plate

Example: F 03 6024 4023 AGDS U320T E31

03 = Year

6024 = Coach Build Unit #

4023 = Internal Designations

AGDS = Floorplan

U320T = Chassis

E31 = Internal Engine Designations

our 1998 U295 had only 21k when we bought it in November, now it has 22k!
I'm doing a lot more reading than I anticipated.... but this forum has been hugely educational so far.
I like projects, so that helps, but it is in great shape so far. There's been several fixes completed and I'm learning lots every week.
I hope I get to a point where I can actually add to the knowledge base instead of raiding it!

Pretty close.  Air filter got wet.  It was a cheap one put in by PO.  Pretty much destroyed the engine.  North of $25K to rebuild, insurance covered the repair.

AIr Filter Failure Warning! Don't get Dusted! (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=25391.msg200905#msg200905)

Who are you using for insurance?  Is that extended warranty or something else.  I've been looking for extended warranty, but most companies are telling me they cant write a policy for a 2002 coach because of the age.

Thanks!

I have made four short trips.  Maybe 38 now.

2006 Nimbus 236.

Working on suspension air leaks now.  Will need service and new tires sometime this year.

Entertainment system ?  Not so good. Many problems and I have little interest in fixing them.

No major problems that I know about.
