Title: Re: Both ACs leaking
Post by: RainCatcher on December 16, 2015, 08:17:12 pm
Went to the coach to winterize it and noticed that the shower skylight had been leaking.......

Last week we had a similar problem. With our son looking after the home front for the winter, we were ready to set out on our trip to the southwest. The night before we were to leave Seattle we were hit by the first of a long series of storms. Flooding, slides, wash outs, loss of life, the whole Northwest thing. It rained hard all night the night before our departure. When I went out to start the coach in the morning the first thing I discovered was both front and rear AC's had substantial leaks. We didn't want to delay departure so we just stuck buckets under the leaks and took off for Portland, a 4 hour drive. While on the road, Karen, with her trusty iPad found Advanced RV Center just off I-5 in Vancouver, WA across the river from Portland. She called ahead and arranged to get us in as soon as we arrived. Good to their word they diagnosed the problem within 30 minutes. Turned out both AC covers had several cracks. Advanced RV siliconed the cracks as a temporary fix and ordered two new covers for the next day delivery.
We were parked and hooked up before dark at Jantzen Beach RV Park in North Portland; it rained hard all night and no leaks. Around noon the next day I picked up the two new covers and between storms I scrambled up on the roof and replace both covers and have been dry through almost a week of rain and wind on the Oregon Coast. The whole thing including the covers was less than half a coach buck.  Advanced RV Center service was great and fair.

Highly recommend that when time and weather permit, you beef up the screw holes on those shrouds.

funny this should come up as while we are here in Mexico and no rain etc I got on the roof to clean it up and tilt the panels. I found a few small cracks eminating from those screw holes so I took them both off the ac's and did a good clean up then laid a few strips of fibreglass heavy cloth across the holes to extend about 4" either side and up over top of radius. Once set hard I redrilled the holes and spray painted them to closely match the coach colour. Using a "fender washer" of the right hole size I put them back and expect many years of trouble free use (and they look good too)
Simple fix and total cost for paint and glass etc around $25.
